Researchers claim that by increasing your daily diet by one apple or one orange, you can dramatically reduce the risk of premature death from cancer or heart disease.
Scientists at the University of Cambridge reported that A “modest increase” in the amount of fruits and vegetables consumed dramatically improves health. These results have been confirmed for all age groups, regardless of blood pressure levels, for both smokers and non-smokers.
The discovery comes from an ongoing European study looking at links between cancer rates and nutritional quality. The work is being carried out in ten countries, more than half a million people are participating in it.
University of Cambridge professor Kay-T Howe, one of the program’s leaders, said: “Increasing your fruit and vegetable intake by just one to two servings a day can be associated with dramatic health gains.”
The study involved 30 Norfolk residents, men and women aged 000 to 49. To determine how many fruits and vegetables they were eating, the scientists measured their blood levels of vitamin C.
Death rates from heart disease and cancer were higher among those with low levels of vitamin C.
“Overall, 50 extra grams of fruits and vegetables per day reduces the risk of dying from any disease by about 15%,” said Professor Howe.
In general, the risk of death from cancer can be reduced by 20%, and from heart disease by 50%.
Recently, Cancer Research UK and Tesco launched a special campaign. They encourage people to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
One serving is one apple or one orange, one banana, or a small bowl of raspberries or strawberries, or two ladles of vegetables such as broccoli or spinach.
The scientists said that The mixture of substances found in broccoli, which gives this vegetable its characteristic taste, kills Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that causes stomach cancer and ulcers.
Now a team of scientists from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and the French National Research Center are going to find out if people can cope with a Helicobacter pylori infection on their own – with the help of vegetables.
