Zyx is a preparation that belongs to the group of antihistamines. Antihistamines are used to reduce the symptoms associated with seasonal and year-round allergies. Zyx is a second-generation antihistamine, and its active ingredient is levocetirizine. What are the indications and contraindications for the use of the drug? Does the use of Zyx have any side effects?

Zyx – composition and action of the drug

Zyx is one of the second-generation antihistamines that is prescribed to patients struggling with unpleasant symptoms of allergies. The active ingredient in Zyx is levocetirizine, which is chemically the levorotatory enantiomer of cetirizine. This means that the active substance in Zyx has the same summary formula as cetirizine, but differs from it in the spatial arrangement of the individual atoms in the molecule. This is what causes the differences in the properties of both compounds. Levocetirizine, like cetirizine, blocks peripheral histamine receptors. This, in turn, inhibits histamine, a substance that is responsible for the appearance of typical allergy symptoms. Thus, levocetirizine reduces allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, swelling or itching of the mucous membranes.

Zyx – indications for the use of the drug

As a typical antihistamine, Zyx is prescribed to patients who struggle with perennial and seasonal rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria. The indication for the use of Zyx is the lack of effectiveness of other antihistamines, as well as too many additional side effects, such as drowsiness, fatigue, nausea or headache.

Zyx – when not to use the drug?

Even if there are indications for the use of Zyx, it must not be taken if you are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients of the preparation. The drug cannot be used by people who are allergic to hydroxyzine and piperazine derivatives. Severe renal failure is also a contraindication to the use of Zyx. Zyx is also not recommended for people who are struggling with galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency or glucose malabsorption syndrome.

How do I dose Zyx?

Zyx is available from pharmacies and can be obtained from prescription as film-coated tablets. The tablets are taken orally and can be taken with or without food. The dose of Zyx is 5 mg once a day. Do not exceed the recommended dose, as it will not increase the effectiveness of the drug, and only may harm the patient’s health. It is worth noting that in the case of kidney or liver disease, the doctor will individually determine the dose, relatively reducing it.

Zyx – possible side effects

The antihistamine Zyx, like other medicines of this type, can cause side effects. They do not occur in all patients using this preparation, but the specificity of allergy medications causes side effects to appear quite often. The most common side effects are headache, dizziness, fatigue, somnolence, abdominal pain, nausea, weight gain, muscle aches and dry mouth. Occasionally, skin reactions such as itching, rash or hives may occur.

Before use, read the leaflet, which contains indications, contraindications, data on side effects and dosage as well as information on the use of the medicinal product, or consult your doctor or pharmacist, as each drug used improperly is a threat to your life or health.
