Zovirax Intensive is used in the topical treatment of recurrent cold sores on the lips and face caused by Herpes simplex. The drug is an antiviral preparation, the active substance of which is acyclovir. It does not cause systemic effects, as it is absorbed into the blood to a minimum extent. The preparation in the form of a cream is available at a pharmacy without a prescription.

Zovirax Intensive – indications and dosage
Therapeutic indications: topical treatment of recurrent cold sores on the lips and face caused by Herpes simplex.
Dosage
Apply topically to and around lesions as soon as possible after the first symptoms appear.
- Lubricate 5 × / d every 4 h with a night break. The treatment lasts at least 4 days, and 10 days in the case of difficult-to-heal lesions.
Zovirax Intensive and contraindications
A contraindication to the use of Zovirax Intensive is hypersensitivity to acyclovir, valaciclovir, propylene glycol or any of the ingredients of the preparation.
Zovirax Intensive – warnings
- If the lesions do not improve after 10 days of treatment with Zovirax Intensive, the patient should consult a doctor.
- Zovirax Intensive should only be used on cold sores located on the lips and face.
- The drug should not be applied to the mucous membranes (e.g. of the mouth, eyes or vagina).
- Particular care should be taken to prevent the cream from being accidentally put in the eye.
- Ask your doctor for advice if you have severe immune system disorders before starting treatment.
- Before and after using Zovirax Intensive cream, wash your hands to avoid complications or spreading the infection to other parts of the skin.
- During treatment, do not scratch the blisters and scabs and avoid touching them with a towel.
- To reduce the risk of spreading the infection to others, do not allow skin lesions to be touched, shared towels, etc.
- The excipients of the cream include propylene glycol, which may cause skin irritation, and cetostearyl alcohol, which may cause contact dermatitis.
- Use of Zovirax Intensive in pregnancy only after consultation with a doctor and only when absolutely necessary, when the doctor’s opinion is that the benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus.
- Acyclovir passes into breast milk following systemic administration.

After topical administration of Zovirax Intensive, the known interactions are not clinically relevant.
Zovirax Intensive – side effects
At the site of application of Zovirax Intensive, the following may occur:
- stinging feeling
- tingling
- discomfort
- reddening,
- drying,
- itch,
- exfoliation of the skin,
- contact dermatitis has been observed rarely,
- in most cases the allergic reaction was caused by the excipients in the cream base.
