You never know when you need it: first aid for food poisoning

Food poisoning is not uncommon at any time of the year. Poor quality food from a supermarket, a spontaneous market, improper transportation and storage conditions can cause complex toxicity in the body. And this knowledge will help you provide first aid before the arrival of the doctor.

Food that has been improperly stored or transported becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. And some products may contain substances that have got into them from the outside and also cause poisoning.

Signs of food poisoning

The first signs of poisoning appear within 10-30 minutes after the toxin enters the body. In terms of severity, poisoning can be different, depending on the type and amount of the focus: 

 
  • headache, dizziness, weakness, drowsiness,
  • any pain in the stomach or intestines,
  • fever, fever, chills,
  • breathing disorder,
  • nausea and vomiting,
  • diarrhea, sometimes bloody. 

With alcohol poisoning, there is an increase in heart rate, increased blood pressure, redness of the skin, agitation, increased anxiety, vomiting, and even loss of consciousness.

First aid for food poisoning

1. First of all, find out which product caused the poisoning. Set aside all suspicious foods and put them away in an inaccessible place.

2. Call a doctor.

3. Try to clear and flush the victim’s stomach – give the patient plenty of room temperature water to induce vomiting. You can apply pressure to the root of your tongue to speed up the process. After vomiting, give the patient a sorbent, the simplest and most accessible is activated carbon.

4. Lay the victim on his side so that he does not choke on vomit, cover with a blanket if chills appear.

5. Pack suspicious products and hand them over to doctors for research.

Recovery from poisoning

Symptoms of poisoning, with proper treatment, go away after 1-3 days. But the most important thing is to properly restore the body after such a powerful toxic shock. Diet is the key to the success of fast and competent treatment.

The diet should not contain hard-to-digest food – fried, pickled, salted, as well as milk and fatty meat.

Emphasis should be placed on vegetable soups, porridge on the water, cottage cheese in the form of cheesecakes or casseroles, steam cutlets from poultry or fish, fruits, as well as tea or herbal decoction. The amount of water you drink should be increased to 3 liters per day, but coffee and alcohol should be completely excluded.

It is important to restore the intestinal microflora using medications prescribed by a doctor.
