Fucidin is an antibiotic drug for external use. It is issued only on prescription and is not reimbursed by the National Health Fund. The active substance of Fucidin is an antibiotic – fusidic acid – at a concentration of 20 mg / g. Fucidin is available in two forms: cream (5 and 15 g) and ointments (a more greasy texture, also in packages of 5 and 15 g).
How does Fucidin work? Indications for the use of Fucidin
The active substance of Fucidin is fusidic acid. It is an organic compound of an antibiotic nature. It was first isolated in 1960 in Denmark from the cultivation of the Fussidium coccineum fungus isolated from monkey’s feces, and 2 years later it was introduced into medicine. It is a steroidal antibiotic and its mechanism of action is to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis. Fusidic acid can be used internally or externally, unfortunately its disadvantage is that bacteria can build up resistance to it quite quickly.
In Fucidin, the action of fusidic acid is directed against the strains of bacteria on the skin. The drug is primarily used to combat infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus. It is also active against Corynebacterium minutissimum – a coryneform mushroom that causes erythematous dandruff, which is manifested by exfoliating erythematous foci, mainly in the groin area. It is also active against Streptococcus ssp. On the skin and against some gram-negative bacteria. Unfortunately, it does not work on Pseudomonas aeruginosa blue oil sticks.
The indications for the use of Fucidin preparations are such skin diseases caused by bacterial infections as impetigo, furunculosis, inflammation of sweat glands and hair follicles, paronychia. In the case of a disease called sycosis, Fucidin is used in the form of an ointment, and in the treatment of acne vulgaris in the form of a cream. A big advantage of Fucidin is the fact that it can be used safely during pregnancy, but it is better to exercise caution and consult a doctor before feeding.
The treatment period with Fucidin, as with many other antibiotics, is 7 days. The preparation should be applied to the affected areas regularly, 2-3 times a day.
Contraindications and side effects after using Fucidin
The only contraindication to the use of Fucidin is hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients contained in the drug.
An undesirable phenomenon after the use of Fucidin may be the occurrence of bacterial resistance to fusidic acid and the lack of therapeutic effect.
Local reactions are uncommon: rash, dermatitis, itching, erythema, pain, irritation. Hypersensitivity reactions, angioedema, urticaria, vesicles, conjunctivitis may rarely occur. Avoid contact of the preparation with mucous membranes and eyes.
The preparation has no systemic effects and does not affect psychomotor performance.
