The plant looks untidy without pruning. Therefore, it is necessary to form a bush from 2-3 years. It is necessary to remove all curves and thin branches, and to obtain spectacular peduncles and a beautiful crown, cut off all lateral branching shoots.

The hairstyle is done in September or spring, before the sap flow begins. Moreover, each type of hydrangea has its own cutting characteristics.

  • In a tree plant, all weak and twisted shoots, as well as three-year branches, are removed to the base. Young growths are shortened, leaving several buds. The weaker the shoot, the shorter it is cut.

  • In the spring of panicle hydrangea, shoots growing inside the crown are removed, and young growths are shortened by 1-3 buds.

  • In large-leaved hydrangea in September, the branches are slightly shortened, which interfere with the covering of the plant, and in the spring they carry out sanitary pruning, cutting out all frozen, broken and thickening shoots.

Some gardeners form a standard tree based on the strongest shoot of a panicle hydrangea. It is driven out to 70–100 cm, removing the lateral processes, and then forming a spherical crown.

 Shelter for the winter

Treelike and panicle hydrangeas tolerate cold well, so it is enough to sprinkle their roots with a thick layer of peat. Large-leaved hydrangea is more capricious. After the leaves fall, its shoots are bent to the ground, spreading spruce branches under them. From above, the hydrangea is covered with spruce branches or dry leaves. Above the bush, it is better to install a frame (sold ready for shelter) by pulling a spanbond over it. In spring, the protective layer is removed gradually so as not to stress the plant due to temperature fluctuations.

Coloring of inflorescences

Large-leaved hydrangea flowers can change shades. If the ground under a plant with pink buds is acidified with high-moor peat, or potassium alum, or citric acid, the flowers will take on a blue tint. If you add acidifiers to the soil only on one side, then the same bush will give pink, blue and slightly lilac flowers.

If the white hydrangea has a greenish tint of inflorescences, dark pink or red, then by watering it with potassium alum, you can achieve the appearance of lilac and purple inflorescences. To do this, water procedures begin at the stage of the appearance of buds, and the powder is diluted in a ratio of 50 grams for every 10 liters, watered every two weeks, and not as the earth dries up.

You can not experiment with white hydrangea, it will remain so under any circumstances.

Cutting

Hydrangea can be propagated using cuttings remaining after pruning, or by layering. Cuttings with a couple of internodes are cut while they are green. They need to leave part of last year’s shoot, it is called the heel. The bottom cut should be oblique, at an angle of 45 degrees, the top straight. In order for rooting to be successful, the cuttings are soaked in a growth stimulator (according to the instructions on the package of the selected product). Hydrangea is planted to a depth of 2-3 cm.

For reproduction by layering, the branch is bent to the ground, and the part with the buds is lowered into the hole and covered with soil. The tip, about 20 cm long, should remain on the surface. In the spring or fall of next year, the rooted shoot can be separated from the branch and planted in a permanent place.
