Yoshta: planting and care

Joshta is a hybrid of currants and gooseberries, bred in Germany. He took all the best from the “parents”. The berries of this bush are large and sweet, unlike gooseberries, there are no thorns on the branches. Learn to plant and grow this unusual hybrid plant.

Plant the bush in March or September. In the first case, it is important to be in time before the start of sap flow. For planting, choose a sunny area with fertile soil. It is good if a currant or gooseberry bush is located nearby.

The dimensions of the pit for planting the plant are 50 × 50 × 50 cm. The step between the seedlings is 1,5 m. To create a hedge, reduce the distance to 40 cm. Start preparing the pit in half a month, add humus, ash, superphosphate to it. Place the seedling in the middle of the hole, spread the roots and dig in with earth from the upper fertile soil layer.

Tamp the soil around the seedling and pour a bucket of water over it. When the ground dries out a little, cover it with peat, humus, or straw of your choice. The layer of mulch should be at least 5 cm. Cut the seedling so that no more than 3 buds remain on each branch.

Here are some basic shrub care tips:

  • The plant loves abundant watering, the lack of moisture delays its growth. Moisten the soil around the bush 30-40 cm deep. To do this, use about 30 liters of water per square meter. Water the bushes early in the morning or in the evening.
  • After watering, it is advisable to mulch the soil with peat or humus. Mulch will protect the soil from drying out and will feed the roots.
  • Fertilize the shrub well for the first three years after planting. Add 30 g of superphosphate and 20 g of potassium sulfate under it every season. From the fourth year of life, reduce the amount of fertilizer. Regardless of age, add 500 g of ash under the bush every autumn.
  • In the spring and fall, do preventive spraying against pests, as they love to feast on this plant.

It is important to trim the shrubbery twice a year. In early spring, cut off broken, diseased and frozen branches. In the fall, after the foliage has fallen, cut off diseased branches completely, and shorten healthy ones by a third. This plant does not need decorative pruning.

If you carry out the correct planting of yoshta and take care of it, the bush will begin to bear fruit already in the second year of life. You will have fruits that are more similar in size to cherries, very tasty and aromatic. In addition, most likely, none of your neighbors in the country will have such a plant.
