Xyzal

The active substance in Xyzal is levocetirizine. Its potency is equal to half the dose of cetirizine. Xyzal is used to combat the symptoms of allergic reactions such as chronic rhinitis and skin reactions of the ‘urticaria’ type. Xyzal is one of the antihistamines.

Indications and contraindications for the use of the drug Xyzal

Indication for taking Xyzal in the form of syrup or tablets is allergy symptoms. Contraindications include hypersensitivity to any of the drug components (levocethrizine, cetirizine, hydroxyzine) and kidney diseases (including acute renal dysfunction). During the treatment with Xyzalem, you should not consume drinks containing alcohol. Particular caution in the use of the drug is recommended to patients who have problems with incontinence.

Xyzal tablets are not given to children under six years of age due to the lack of adequate studies confirming the effectiveness of Xyzal in this age group.

Xyzal in the form of tablets should also be avoided by patients who have been diagnosed with lactose intolerance, as it is one of the components of this pharmacological agent.

Paradoxically, Xyzal in the form of an oral solution may cause allergic reactions in some people. Xyzal in liquid form is not recommended for people intolerant to fructose sugars.

Contraindications regarding the group of patients who should avoid taking the drug also apply to pregnant and breastfeeding women, although in justified cases a specialist doctor may consider Xyzalem treatment in pregnant or lactating women with special caution.

The most common side effects that were reported using Xyzal were fatigue and headaches. Abdominal pain and weakness have been observed less frequently. When it comes to children, Xyzal can cause discomforts such as diarrhea, sleepiness, vomiting and constipation. The drug does not cause major interactions with other popular drugs. Although no direct effect of Xyzal on driving was observed during clinical trials, due to drowsiness often observed in patients, activities that require increased concentration (such as driving machines or driving a car) after taking the preparations are not recommended.

Dosage of Xyzal

Xyzal can be used in children over six years of age and adults. The dose is 5 mg (tablets) or 10 ml (oral solution) per day. Dosages in patients with chronic kidney diseases and the elderly are selected individually by a doctor, which also applies to the frequency of taking the drug. The specialist physician will use factors such as body weight and renal clearance to determine dosages for children and adolescents with renal insufficiency. Treatment with Xyzalem is symptomatic. This preparation is most often used when the symptoms do not persist for more than 4 days a week or a month during the year. The Xyzalem treatment can be suspended after the symptoms have disappeared and come back to it when they reappear. The preparation can be taken regardless of meals.

Xyzal – tablets

Xyzal tablets should be taken with or without food, and washed down with water. The preparation should be abandoned in case of hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients (it is worth paying attention to the auxiliary substances, which often cause allergies).

Xyzal – syrup

Xyzal in the form of a syrup is applied by measuring the appropriate dose with a syringe. You can mix it with water.

Xyzal – opinions

According to the prevailing opinions, Xyzal is an effective drug even for children, cheap and fast-acting. Some reviews show that it does not completely combat the symptoms, but only delicately slows them down, which may not be sufficient for acute allergic conditions.
