Xylorin – indications, dosage, contraindications, side effects

Xylorin is used to treat the symptomatic treatment of rhinitis and sinusitis. The drug contains xylometazoline, which, when applied to the nasal mucosa, reduces swelling and reduces the amount of secretions. The use of the preparation in pregnant women is contraindicated. The drug is a nasal spray and can be obtained without a prescription.

Xylorin is an alpha-adrenergic stimulant drug, an imidazoline derivative.

Xylorin – indications and dosage

Xylorin is a preparation recommended for the treatment of:

  1. symptomatic rhinitis,
  2. paranasal sinuses.

Dosage of the preparation

Xylorin is a nasal spray. Do not exceed the recommended dose of the preparation. Drug treatment should last about 3-5 days.

  1. Adults and children over 6 years of age, 1-2 doses in each nostril every 8 hours for 3-5 days.

Xylorin and contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Xylorin are:

  1. allergy to any component of the preparation,
  2. other adrenergic drugs,
  3. atrophic rhinitis,
  4. angle-closure glaucoma,
  5. parallel use of MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants,
  6. should not be used by people after surgical procedures involving the exposure of the dura mater.

Xylorin – drug warnings

  1. Xylorin is for single person nasal use only.
  2. A doctor should be consulted if symptoms persist or worsen after 3-5 days.
  3. Be careful and consult a doctor in the case of people with cardiovascular diseases (e.g. ischemic heart disease), hypertension, diabetics, patients with hyperthyroidism, prostatic hyperplasia, glaucoma.
  4. Treatment with Xylorin for longer than recommended or too frequent use may cause secondary vasodilation and drug-induced rhinitis.
  5. Contact with the eyes should be avoided.
  6. Pregnant women should not take Xylorin.
  7. Women who are breastfeeding should consult a doctor before using the spray, as there is no data on the safety of its use during this period.
  8. Long-term treatment with the preparation or the use of high doses may cause side effects on the cardiovascular and central nervous system. They may affect the ability to drive and use motor vehicles. You should not drive or operate a motor vehicle if this happens.

Xylorin with other medications

  1. Do not use Xylorin with MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants (e.g. amitriptyline, imipramine) as there is a risk of a significant increase in blood pressure.
  2. The use of the drug with other sympathomimetics such as ephedrine or pseudoephedrine should be avoided.

Xylorin – side effects

Taking Xylorin may cause the following side effects:

  1. congestion, burning sensation of the mucous membranes of the nose and throat,
  2. dry nasal mucosa
  3. sneezing,
  4. very rarely systemic effects: increased heart rate, increase in blood pressure, palpitations, headache, nausea, drowsiness, tremors, weakness, fatigue, visual disturbances, allergic reactions (dyspnoea, angioedema),
  5. using the drug for a longer period than recommended or the use of high doses may lead to secondary drug-induced rhinitis manifested by redness, swelling and runny nose.
