Xylometazoline WZF – indications, dosage, contraindications, side effects

Xylometazoline WZF is a local preparation which decongest the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa and stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors. Nasal drops contain xylometazoline and are indicated in the auxiliary treatment of: acute viral or bacterial rhinitis, sinusitis, acute otitis media. The preparation is intended for nasal use only and is available without a prescription.

Action

Xylometazoline WZF is a preparation that affects alpha-adrenergic receptors. Contains xylometazoline, an imidazoline derivative, applied directly to the nasal mucosa, it narrows blood vessels, reduces swelling and reduces nasal discharge.

Xylometazoline WZF – indications for use and dosage

Xylometazoline WZF are nasal drops needed in supportive treatment in:

  1. acute rhinitis of viral or bacterial origin,
  2. acute or chronic worsening paranasal sinusitis,
  3. allergic rhinitis,
  4. acute otitis media (to open the Eustachian tube).

Dosage of Xylometazoline WZF

Xylometazoline WZF comes in the form of nasal drops and should be used as directed. Do not exceed the doses as it may harm your life or health.

0,05% solution.

  1. Children 2-12. years of age: 1-2 drops in each nostril 1 or 2 times a day, every 8-10 hours; up to 3 doses in the nostril a day.

0,1% solution.

  1. Adults and children after the age of 12: 2-3 drops in each nostril every 8-10 hours; up to 3 doses in the nostril a day.

DO NOT APPLY THE NOSE DROPS FOR MORE THAN 3-5 days.

Xylometazoline WZF and contraindications to use

Contraindications to the use of Xylometazoline WZF nasal drops are:

  1. allergy to any ingredient of the preparation,
  2. atrophic rhinitis,
  3. convalescence after transnasal surgeries and after operations involving the exposure of the dura mater,
  4. pregnancy.

Xylometazoline WZF with other drugs

When using Xylometazoline WZF, inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, even those obtained without a prescription.

  1. do not use the drops during treatment with MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants,
  2. Concomitant use with other sympathomimetics (ephedrine or pseudoephedrine) should be avoided.

Xylometazoline WZF and side effects

Xylometazoline WZF nasal drops can also cause side effects. However, it should be remembered that the advantages of taking the drug are usually greater than the side effects.

  1. The following may occur: congestion, burning sensation in the nose and throat, dry nasal mucosa, sneezing.
  2. Systemic effects are very rare: increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, palpitations, headache, nausea, drowsiness, tremors, weakness, fatigue, allergic reactions (dyspnoea, angioedema).

The use of Xylometazoline WZF drops for a longer period than recommended or the use of high doses may lead to secondary drug-induced rhinitis.
