How do Xylometazoline WZF nasal drops work?

Xylometazoline WZF is a drug in the form of nasal drops that constrict blood vessels after they are applied to the nasal mucosa. The effect is reduction of swelling and congestion of the mucosaas well as reducing excess secretion production. The preparation also enables more efficient outflow of secretions from the sinuses. This action of the drug is provided by the active substance – xylometazoline (xylometazoline hydrochloride). It is a sympathomimetic drug that acts directly on α-adrenergic receptors, stimulating them.

The effect of Xylometazoline WZF can be observed within 5 to 10 minutes from the moment of administration. It lasts up to 10 hours. Before using the drug, make sure which variant of the drug you are dealing with:

1. Xylometazolin WZF 0,05% is a drug intended for children from 2 to 12 years of age;
2. Xylometazolin WZF 0,1% can be used by adults and children older than 12 years.

Xylometazoline WZF – indications for use

The use of Xylometazoline WZF 0,05% and 0,1% is recommended especially in the course of inflammation, incl acute rhinitis of viral or bacterial etiology or allergic rhinitis. The indication for the use of the drug is also chronic or acute exacerbating sinusitis. Xylometazoline WZF can also be used to clear the Eustachian tube in the case of acute otitis media (also then the drug is administered into the nose).

Xylometazoline WZF – contraindications

The use of Xylometazoline WZF in certain situations is not recommended. This is especially true people who are allergic to xylometazoline or any other ingredients in these nasal drops, patients with a pituitary gland removed (or after other operations on the nervous system), as well as with nasal mucosa defects or changes within it. Xylometazoline WZF solution should not be used during pregnancy. It is advisable to consult a physician when planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.

4. disturbing symptoms in children (agitation, difficulty falling asleep) – if they occur, the drug should be discontinued;
5. the need for an initial consultation with a doctor in the case of certain diseases: hyperthyroidism, diabetes, prostate hyperplasia, angle-closure glaucoma, angina pectoris, high blood pressure.

Xylometazoline WZF – composition

The active ingredient of Xylometazoline WZF nasal drops is xylometazolina in the form of xylometazoline hydrochloride. The content of this substance in the preparation of Xylometazoline WZF 0,05% is 0,5 mg in 1 ml of solution (0,025 mg in one drop), and in the case of Xylometazoline WZF 0,1% it is 1 mg per 1 ml (0,05 mg in one drop) ).

The other ingredients of Xylometazoline WZF are excipients: purified water, sorbitol, sodium chloride, sodium dihydrogen phosphate monohydrate, disodium edetate, disodium phosphate dodecahydrate, benzalkonium chloride (solution).

Xylometazoline WZF – dosage

Xylometazoline WZF solution is used only by instillation into the nose, and one package should be used by one person in order to maintain hygiene. The recommended dosage of the nasal drops should be as follows:

1. Xylometazoline WZF 0,05% in children between 2 and 12 years of age – 1 to 2 drops should be instilled into each nostril once or twice a day, at intervals of 8-10 hours; no more than 3 doses of the solution should be administered to the child in each nostril per day;
2. Xylometazoline WZF 0,1% in adults and children older than 12 years – give 2 to 3 drops of the drug into each nostril every 8-10 hours; no more than 3 doses of the fluid should be used in each nostril during the day.

Xylometazoline WZF – symptoms of overdose

Xylometazoline WZF nasal drops should be taken according to the dosage recommendations. In the event of an overdose, especially if it concerns a child, contact your doctor immediately. The following symptoms could indicate an overdose of Xylometazoline WZF or its ingestion by a child:

1. somnolence;
2. over-sedation in children;
3. disturbances of consciousness;
4. breathing problems, irregular breathing;
5. increase in blood pressure, which may be accompanied by weakness, malaise and severe headache;
6. fast heartbeat.

Xylometazoline WZF – side effects

In some cases, you may experience side effects after taking Xylometazoline WZF. Especially dangerous, although rare, are allergic reactions that cause swelling of the lips, tongue, throat and face. It can make it difficult to swallow, cause breathing problems and cause shortness of breath. In the event of such a reaction, stop taking the drug and contact your doctor immediately.

Other side effects of Xylometazoline WZF nasal drops that are seen very rarely include headache, nausea, blurred vision, somnolence, fatigue, weakness, high blood pressure, and palpitations or rapid heartbeat.
