Xenna and Xenna Extra for constipation. How to dose?

Xenna and Xenna Extra is a medication used in the acute treatment of constipation. It is a laxative that acts directly on the walls of the large intestine. The drug can be used as an aid in haemorrhoidal problems to regulate the stool. The drug is in the form of over-the-counter tablets. Pregnant women should consult a doctor before use.

Xenna and Xenna Extra – indications and dosage

Xenna and Xenna Extra are recommended for:

  1. in the acute treatment of constipation,
  2. to empty the large intestine before X-rays and other diagnostic tests,
  3. auxiliary in hemorrhoids as a stool regulating agent.

Drug dosage

Xenna and Xenna Extra are tablets to be taken by mouth. It is not recommended to take the preparation for more than 10 days.

  1. Adults and children after 12 years of age 2 tablets at a time. Xenna or 1 tablet. Xenna Extra preferably at bedtime. If necessary, the dose can be repeated or increased to 3-4 tablets.
  2. Xenna lub 2 tabl. Xenna Extra 1 ×/d.
  3. Max dose – 4 tablets Xenna or 2 tablets. Xenna Extra / d.

Xenna and Xenna Extra and contraindications for taking

There are the following contraindications for taking Xenna and Xenna Extra:

  1. bowel obstruction,
  2. acute inflammation in the abdominal cavity,
  3. Leśniowski and Crohn’s disease,
  4. ulcerative colitis,
  5. allergy to sennosides or any component of the preparation,
  6. undiagnosed abdominal pain,
  7. states of dehydration accompanied by loss of electrolytes,
  8. menstruation,
  9. use by children up to 12 years of age,
  10. use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Xenna and Xenna Extra – warnings

  1. If you experience severe stomach pain, vomiting or dizziness, do not take laxatives.
  2. You should refrain from taking laxatives for at least 2 hours after taking other oral preparations.
  3. In the event of bleeding or inability to pass stools (after taking the preparation), consult a doctor.
  4. It should only be taken when other methods (diet changes or taking a mild laxative swelling agent) have failed.

Xenna and Xenna Extra with other medications

  1. The effect of cardiac glycosides and other antiarrhythmic agents (e.g. quinidine) may be potentiated during long-term treatment.
  2. It is not recommended to use the preparation with drugs that cause hypokalemia: diuretics, adrenocorticosteroids, licorice root extracts, due to the accumulation of side effects.

Xenna and Xenna Extra – side effects

Taking Xenna and Xenna Extra can cause:

  1. stomach pain,
  2. diarrhea
  3. water and electrolyte disturbances,
  4. hypokalemia,
  5. nausea,
  6. change in the color of urine,
  7. discoloration of the colon mucosa,
  8. proteinuria,
  9. hematuria,
  10. impaired motor function of the large intestine.
