Xanax is a sedative, anxiolytic and hypnotic drug. Xanax is used for the short-term treatment of anxiety, which is equally severe, and for anxiety associated with depression. The preparation in the form of tablets is available in a pharmacy on prescription.
Xanax – indications
Xanax is a drug used in psychiatry and neurology primarily to combat anxiety and nervous disorders. It eliminates anxiety, tension and depression. Xanax has a sedative, anticonvulsant and hypnotic effect, it is soothing and may cause indifference. The active substance is alprazolam.

Using Xanax
Xanax is a preparation available on prescription and can only be used after consulting a doctor and according to the dose recommended by him. Exceeding the prescribed amount of the drug may be counterproductive. A doctor should also be consulted on reducing and discontinuing the dose of the drug. - in generalized anxiety disorder or anxiety states coexisting with depression, the usual doses are from 0,25 to 0,5 mg three times a day (the total daily dose should not exceed 3 mg);
- in panic disorder or agoraphobia, the initial doses are 0,5-1 mg once a day at bedtime, then, according to the doctor’s recommendations, are gradually increased (the maximum daily dose is 10 mg);
- treatment with Xanax should be as short as possible and using the lowest daily doses; the total duration of treatment should not exceed 8-12 weeks;
- do not discontinue the drug overnight due to the possibility of withdrawal symptoms;
- the dose is reduced gradually as directed by your doctor, most often not faster than 0,5 mg every 3 days;
- immediate use of the drug does not pose a risk of addiction;
- Xanax tablets should be swallowed whole – crushing them, dissolving them or sucking them in the mouth may reduce the effectiveness of the active substance;
- increasing the recommended daily dose does not increase the therapeutic effect, but may cause the appearance of side effects and promote the development of addiction.

Other Drugs and Xanax – Interactions
Xanax should not be used with other psychotropic, anticonvulsant and antihistamines. Xanax impairs psychophysical fitness and the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery.
Xanax – contraindications and caution
- night apnea and respiratory failure,
- myasthenia gravis is a contraindication to the use of Xanax,
- kidney and liver diseases,
- pregnant women should not take Xanax (the preparation causes fetal defects, therefore contraception is required during the treatment),
- hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines or excipients of the drug,
- caution should be exercised in patients with a history of depression,
- caution should be exercised in people who have had thoughts of suicide,
- caution should be exercised in people who abuse alcohol or drugs (or have a history of drug addiction).

Xanax – side effects
Among the side effects resulting from taking Xanax we can change:
- memory impairment,
- mental states such as: disorientation, confusion, de-reality, hallucinations,
- paradoxical states: increased excitability, nervousness, irritability, aggressive behavior,
- libido disorders,
- mania manifested by the compulsion to speak, psychomotor agitation, racing thoughts,
- lethargy,
- dizziness,
- lowering concentration,
- decreased appetite and indigestion,
- visual disturbances (vision through fog),
- dryness of the mucous membranes.
The drug can only be obtained with a prescription.
