When is World Writer’s Day?
World Writer’s Day 2023 is celebrated March 3since 1986. Not an official holiday.
history of the holiday
The word is a powerful weapon in the hands of the speaker. It gives hope, introduces history, can be a reward or a punishment. For centuries, writers, poets, “masters of the word” have been looking for answers to topical questions, trying to reflect in their works and essays the features of the era in which they lived, allowing descendants to plunge into times far away for them.
Writing has existed for a very long time, but it could only be considered a profession when it became paid. Many works and manuscripts of ancient authors and philosophers have survived to our times. Writing can be learned all your life, discovering new facets of creativity for yourself and the reader. There is no age limit for choosing this path. The main thing is to strive to convey something important to the world and to have an honest civil position.
At the beginning of the 1921th century, the idea arose to create a club that would unite writers and journalists who advocated freedom of speech, against the falsification of information and the distortion of public facts. This idea belonged to the writer Katherine Dawson. The club was given the name PEN, which was an abbreviation of the English words poets, essayists, novelists – poets, essayists, novelists. John Galsworthy was appointed director, who had headed it since 11. Already after the first meeting, about 130 branches were opened in the world. At the moment there are more than XNUMX branches in many countries.
At the next 48th Congress of the International PEN Center, its participants decided to establish a holiday “World Writer’s Day”, which will remind of the role of writing in the world. Since then, it has been celebrated annually by writers, editors, journalists, writers and publicists.
