For many people, the word “sea” is associated with a pleasant stay, bronze tan, bright summer sun. Others like to watch popular science programs about the sea and its inhabitants. And there are a number of global problems associated with it. To draw people’s attention to the solution of “marine” issues, a special date appeared in the calendar of international holidays. We tell you when the World Maritime Day will be celebrated in 2022 and what traditions exist.
What date is World Maritime Day in 2022?
The holiday dates back to 1978. For two years in a row, World Maritime Day was celebrated on March 17, and in 1980 the date was moved to the end of September. When exactly the events dedicated to the holiday take place depend on the country and year, but, as a rule, the last Thursday of the month is given to the celebrations. In 2022, World Maritime Day in Our Country and the world will be celebrated on September 29.
There are other holidays with a water theme. For example:
- World Water Day – March 22,
- International Black Sea Day – October 31,
- World Ocean Day is celebrated around the world on June 8th.
Interesting facts about the holiday
Where did the holiday originate? | The holiday originated in 1978 in London. Established at the X session of the Assembly of the UN Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization |
We raise important questions | Every year World Maritime Day gets a new theme. The goal is to highlight current issues in the maritime industry. For example, in 2017 the theme of the conference was empowering women in the maritime community, and in 2011 there were discussions about piracy and the damage caused by maritime robbers. |
What needs to be fought | Due to active human activity, popular marine fish (cod and tuna) are almost destroyed. Up to 21 million barrels of oil enter the seas and oceans every year. Wastes from industrial production, which are discharged into water bodies, and the contents of landfills, which are entire (albeit small) islands, enter the sea. All this has an extremely negative effect on marine flora and fauna. |
history of the holiday
To celebrate the contribution of the international maritime industry to the economy and shipping, the UN, through the Intergovernmental Maritime Organization (now the International Maritime Organization), established World Maritime Day in 1978. The holiday highlights the problems associated with maritime safety, with the environmentally friendly use of ships and introduces people to the careful handling and conservation of marine stocks.
Each year, the International Maritime Organization selects a specific theme to highlight issues and current events in the maritime industry.
Holiday traditions
Given that the holiday is included in the UN calendar, international conferences are timed to coincide with the date. But World Maritime Day is celebrated not only by diplomats and major environmentalists.
Traditionally, competitions, festivals and rallies are held in different regions and cities to protect the seas and oceans, and, in general, the environment. Lectures are held in schools and universities on the richness of the water world and the rational use of these resources. Volunteers organize environmental events, such as cleaning public beaches.
Also on this day, various seminars, conferences and public performances related to the maritime theme are held.
