Work plan at the summer cottage: October
And in the garden, and in the garden, and in the flower garden there are still many things that must be done before winter.
1st decade (from 1 to 10 October)
In the garden
Harvest viburnum, sea buckthorn, rowan.
After the foliage has completely fallen, you can start transplanting and planting fruit trees.
If there was little rain, water the plantings. This will help them winter well.
In the garden
Harvest cabbage and red cabbage. This should be done on a dry sunny day.
Clear the beds of weeds, remove supports and arches from greenhouses. Dig up the soil and remove the roots of the weeds.
Store the root vegetables. To prevent diseases, sprinkle vegetables with powdered chalk.
In the flower garden
Stop mowing the lawn. The grass for wintering should be at least 10 cm – this will protect the lawn from freezing.
Cut off the stems at the root of perennial flowers remaining in the soil for the winter: delphinium, goldenrod, peony, phlox.
Plant tulip and hyacinth bulbs.
2st decade (from 11 to 20 October)
In the garden
Bend the trunks of raspberries and blackberries to the ground. Cover the tree and shrub circles with peat or dry fallen leaves. Whitewash the trunks of fruit trees and large branches. This will protect them from sunburn in winter.
In the garden
Dig up the horseradish. Cut off the leaves first, and then dig in the rhizomes to a depth of 30-40 cm with a garden pitchfork. Apply phosphorus-potassium fertilizers to the beds, as well as compost and rotted manure. Plant parsley, celery, and beets for winter forcing.
In the flower garden
Bend the hydrangea to the ground, sprinkle it with soil or peat and cover it with spruce branches. Cover tubular and oriental lily hybrids with moss or dry foliage. The layer should be at least 20 cm. In areas freed from gladioli, dahlias and other non-hibernating plants, dig up the soil, apply organic fertilizers and, if necessary, lime.
3st decade (from 21 to 31 October)
In the garden
Prepare cuttings for spring grafting. Tie spruce branches with the needles down to young trees – this will protect the trunks from damage by hares and mice. Spread shields and brushwood along the planting to keep the snow out. This will save the soil from freezing.
In the garden
Prepare the soil for planting seedlings. Sow carrots, beets, radishes, parsley before winter. You can do this when there is a steady cold snap (minus 2-3 ° C). Watch the temperature regime in the basements where vegetables are stored. If the walls and ceiling are sweating, ventilate the area. But only before the frost sets in!
In the flower garden
Cover clematis and other heat-loving vines and shrubs for the winter. Cover the roses with the onset of persistent frost. Store the dried gladioli bulbs in paper bags.
