Let’s take a look at different countries of the world – how do they serve mulled wine?
France – cheese and unsweetened fruits
Cut several types of cheese into cubes, cut the apple and orange into wedges. Fry small croutons and serve in separate bowls. Place a glass of toothpicks and guests will make their own canapes, varying the ingredients.
Holland – sweet donuts
Donuts with jam, sprinkled with cocoa, powdered sugar or drizzled with honey will go well with hot sweet wine.
Germany – pork
Do not be surprised, but fatty meat dishes will perfectly complement mulled wine if it is very spicy. Pork is fried or stewed with onions. A variation of this appetizer is Bavarian sausages, spicy and juicy on the inside. This is exactly the option that is served at Christmas markets in Germany. They are very convenient to eat on the street – right in front of the wine shop. The Germans also like to add black pepper to wine and combine it with sausages.
Baking made from crumbly shortcrust pastry with fruit or berry filling also goes well with mulled wine. Soft baked goods will be “harder” for the stomach, but if you bake small buns with jam or raisins, they will be very convenient to eat. This snack is widespread in Sweden. As well as gingerbread cookies as a snack for mulled wine.
What is mulled wine served
Hot alcohol is traditionally served in large clay mugs or glass glasses with a handle. Ordinary glasses or wine glasses will not work – the drink is hot and will be inconvenient to hold. After all, mulled wine is not drunk through a straw, it is slowly sipped in small sips in order to feel the delicate taste and not get drunk right away.
Serve hot wine on the table either in portioned cups or in a large jug. And it is better to cover the container so that the drink does not cool down.
