With a New Year flavor: in Holland, beer is brewed from Christmas trees

An unusual and very valuable action was started by Dutch brewers last year. It’s called Tree to Table and encourages people to turn in their Christmas trees for beer production.

Lowlander Pilot Brewery founder Frederick Kampmann said the campaign’s motive is simple – to reduce the number of trees in landfills by making them sustainable.

As a result, we managed to make a delicious drink – India Pale Ale (IPA), or, as it is also called, “winter ale”. The manufacturer describes it as “light, refreshing, with tart tones and a resinous citrus flavor.”

For the production of the first batch last year, the brewers used 1 trees. The local botanical garden, as well as several metropolitan restaurants and an entertainment complex, where especially large Christmas trees remained after the Christmas banquets, joined the project.

The first batch of 2019 beer began to be produced after January 10. For the manufacture of “winter ale”, in addition to needles, juniper berries are also used, which add a special piquancy to the drink. And boxes are made of wood.

Of course, not all trees were suitable. Trees that were impregnated with fire-resistant liquid or sprayed with snow spray by vendors were not suitable for food production due to their toxicity.

Handed over the tree – get ready for a party

It should be noted that those who donated their Christmas trees to the brewery can expect party invitations. Lowlander is going to host a private gastronomic party, the Botanical Dinner Experience, to which everyone who donated trees for the first batch will be invited.

Nowadays, connoisseurs of unusual flavors can taste the first batch of IPA. You can buy it on the company’s website for € 2,7 – this is how much a 0,33 liter bottle will cost.

Holland is a country of creativity and inventions. We will remind, earlier we wrote that here we have learned to grow tiny “cocktail” watermelons, and also presented grown pink and purple potatoes.
