Winter Moscow carrots: description
Mid-season carrot varieties have all the necessary qualities for long-term storage. Carrots “Moscow winter” combine not only benefits and taste, but also perfectly preserved throughout the entire winter period. With the right conditions, you will be able to consume natural vitamins all year round, not just in summer.
Carrots “Moscow winter” – description of the variety
This carrot variety is perfect for both spring and winter sowing. The juicy and tender pulp of the root vegetable has a delicate aroma and bright taste. “Moskovskaya Zimnyaya” is one of the best varieties that can be stored practically until next summer without losing its useful qualities.
To make sure of this, let’s take a look at the main characteristics of the variety:
- The length of a mature root crop ranges from 16 to 18 cm. It has a conical shape with a blunt end.
- The mass of one fruit ranges from 100 to 180 years. The yield of the variety is about 6-7 kg per 1 m².
- The content of carotene is 10-12 mg per 100 g of the product. The amount of sugar is from 7 to 8%, which gives the carrots a delicate sweetish taste.
- Retains average resistance to diseases of vegetables.
With winter sowing, the ripening of the crop occurs about a week earlier than other mid-season varieties, which very favorably distinguishes this variety from others.
Carrots “Moscow winter” – cultivation features
If you plan to grow carrots using the spring sowing method, then the seeds should be planted in May. It is best to purchase seeds treated with special preparations. This will avoid contamination of the crop with various diseases. Harvesting of mid-season varieties begins around mid-September and ends in early October. You just have to take care of the proper storage of the crop.
Like any other carrot, “Moscow Winter” is rather unpretentious in its care. It is enough to prepare well-drained, loosened soil for planting and fertilize it. Then the gardener will only need to take care of the timely watering and weeding of the beds.
Winter sowing of seeds is carried out at the onset of the first frost so that they do not have time to germinate. The beds for sowing should be prepared in advance; it is recommended to add rotted sawdust and humus to the soil. When a stable subzero temperature sets in, you can start planting seeds. And then next year you can eat fresh carrots before everyone else and treat your loved ones with it.
