In a recent report of the international consumption of the wine market, an increase in the same with respect to the previous year is envisaged, giving the sector optimism to face the challenges of this year.
A few months after the start of the harvest, at the headquarters of the Paris International Wine Organization (OIV), its Managing Director Jean-Marie Aurand, we took stock of the situation of the sector, the aspects of the harvests and the international projection of the 2013 wine and the expectations for this year.
The data that were brought to light in this report, spoke of the cultivated areas (7,436 million hectares) and their stabilization process. The increase in production in all the countries of the world, reaching figures of 278,5 million Hectoliters, and how its commercialization and relevant aspects of foreign trade and exports of the countries that produce these processed liters will be faced.
World consumption
In global figures, the planet’s consumers have acquired 238,7 Million Hl in the past year, producing a decrease compared to the previous year by about 2,5 Million Hl.
It should be noted the data that is thrown with respect to the “essentially producing” European countries as is the case of France, Italy and Spain, producing a decrease of 2,1 million, 0,8 million and 0,2 million hectoliters consumed respectively
Leaving the global consumption figure of these in:
- France: 28,1 Million Hl.
- Italy: 21,7 Million Hl.
- Spain: 9,1 Mill of Hl.
Regarding non-producing consuming countries, it is worth highlighting the data from China, which presents a slowdown or brake in its consumption, leaving the figure at 16,8 million Hl., Producing a decrease of 3,8% in this last year, leaving the figure of 17 Million in 2012 is already far away.
In previous years, the growth of this market led to the surpluses of European productions occupying an interesting value in Asian consumption, a fact that currently makes the marketing channels rethink, diversifying the places in the world where they can be offered and especially serving current consumption and growth forecasts for these developing countries.
Traveling to the other side of the Atlantic, the data uncheck consumption in the US, making it the world’s leading domestic consumer by volume of Hl produced and consumed entirely in that country. We are talking about 29,1 Million Hl. of wine.
Other producing countries such as the South American Argentina, Chile and Brazil also offered a non-significant increase in their consumption, but growth in any case.
The wines
The product types that generate the bulk of the international wine trade are still wines, representing 71% of consumption, and sparkling wines occupying only 17% of it.
Compared to the data provided in the previous report for 2013, where the export of product decreased by 2,2%, the data for the year 2013 show us an increase of 1,5%, causing a volume of commercial exchange operations around 25,7 billion euros.
The estimates that are valued for this year of 2014 predict a decrease of 10% in production causing a reduction of around 50 million Hl., With the consequent reduction in parallel in the monetary volume of operations, due to the readjustment of margins that the world crisis has forced to stabilize.
