Ivermectin shows a large, statistically significant reduction in the risk and mortality from COVID-19, members of the FLCCC recently announced. However, the World Health Organization remains on the position that it should not be used to treat coronavirus. Prof. Krzysztof Pyrć. – At the moment, we do not have reliable data that would justify the use of ivermectin – says the biologist in an interview with Medonet.
- Doctors are constantly looking for an effective drug against COVID-19
- In Poland, there is a lot of talk about amantadine, while in the world some specialists see an opportunity in ivermectin
- The drug, initially used in veterinary medicine, does not, however, gain the trust of the World Health Organization or the European Medicines Agency. Most experts are also skeptical
- These studies have not shown that ivermectin is effective, says Prof. Krzysztof Pyrć

“Global use of ivermectin will end the COVID-19 pandemic,” recently announced experts from the FLCCC (Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance), an organization of doctors and scientists dedicated to developing and improving treatments for coronavirus patients. They found this after analyzing 27 tests performed up to January this year.
On their basis, they concluded that the use of ivermectin significantly reduces the death rate due to COVID-19, shortens the recovery time from infection and increases the effectiveness of removing the virus from the body. They also found that regular prophylactic use of the drug reduces the risk of contracting COVID-19.
- A drug for COVID-19 that doctors have high hopes for. Another promising research results
Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic and anti-acne drug that is used in both humans and animals. In the context of the coronavirus, it has been studied for several months, but both health organizations and most experts doubt the effectiveness of this drug in the fight against the coronavirus
In late March, the World Health Organization published a statement that ivermectin – outside of clinical trials – should not be used to treat COVID-19.
“ We did work that was not done by the medical authorities: we performed the most comprehensive review of the available data on ivermectin. We applied the gold standard to be able to say with all responsibility that ivermectin could end this pandemic, says Dr. Pierre Kory, president and medical director of the FLCCC.
Ivermectin for COVID-19. Prof. Krzysztof Pyć: There is no evidence of effectiveness
One of the most famous Polish experts on COVID-19, Krzysztof Pyrć, professor of biological sciences at the Jagiellonian University, is skeptical about the position of the FLCCC.
— At the moment, we do not have reliable data that would support the use of ivermectin. Organizations such as the EMA and WHO recommend that it be used only for research purposes, not for standard medical treatment – he says in an interview with Medonet.
- The infection rate in Poland is still low, but has increased in recent days
– There is a difference between a clinical examination and an observation. In a real study, we give a placebo and a test substance in parallel. Both the patient and the doctor do not know which pack contains the drug and which contains the placebo. We avoid situations when we consciously or subconsciously want to get the desired result. In addition, with a disease with a mortality rate of several percent, the study group must be large to obtain reliable data – he adds.
The expert reminds that none of the global or European drug organizations recommends the use of ivermectin in the treatment of COVID-19.
— These studies have not shown that ivermectin is effective. Here you can refer to numerous research works as well as summaries presented by the European Medicines Agency, WHO or the Polish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Tariff System (AOTMiT). The proposal to establish a consensus at a meeting or in a plebiscite is a bit scary. The effectiveness of drugs is not determined by their popularity. Appropriate tests, which are always subject to external and independent evaluation, must be performed – says prof. Throw.

– There are, of course, situations where it is known that the effect of a given drug may be beneficial, and then we get an indication from regulators that although analyzes are still ongoing, individual countries may decide to start administering based on incomplete data. This is not the case for ivermectin. It is possible that at some point such results will appear and then I will personally promote this drug. Actions should be based on data and facts, not our expectations or hopes. Otherwise, you can take any drug from the pharmacy and use it completely randomly – emphasizes the biologist.
Ivermectin – what is this agent?
Ivermectin is a medicine – taken internally – that fights parasitic diseases in animals and humans. It is also used externally in the treatment of scabies, head lice and rosacea.
Ivermectin was discovered in the 70s. It is a mixture of two organic chemical compounds of semi-synthetic origin. It causes nerve disorders in all arthropods and nematodes, paralyzing them and preventing them from feeding. At the same time, it is safe for all mammals due to insufficient penetration into the cerebrospinal fluid.

Despite the lack of recommendations from the WHO or EMA, it is used as a reliever of COVID-19 symptoms in Latin American countries. It has also been approved for human use by South Africa, Zimbabwe, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Mexico, and India. Germany also decided to take a similar step.
Recently, the Indian state of Goa decided to administer ivermectin prophylactically in the face of a delay in the immunization program.
