– As the Medical Council, we want children to go to school as normal in September – told PAP Prof. Magdalena Marczyńska. She added that even the spring wave of infections clearly showed the mild course of COVID-19 infection in children.
Coronavirus: Returning Children to School
– From the beginning of the epidemic, I am in favor of rationality in this matter. We already have enough scientific and empirical evidence to say that children generally do not get seriously ill after being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Severe cases are associated only – and rarely – with serious polymorphism and as complications 4-8 weeks after infection, taking the form of a multi-system inflammatory syndrome. It was diagnosed in a total of about 400 children in Poland. According to world data, severe course, including PIMS, affects less than one percent of infected children. Therefore, I deny that there is a discussion in the Medical Council about not going to school in September. We want them to return to normal education after the holidays. This is extremely important for children and adolescents – told PAP Prof. Marczyńska.
She admitted that there are also not many possible scenarios of restrictions that could possibly be introduced in Poland in the fall.
– We will most likely go along the same route as Great Britain. Quite simply, with a certain number of vaccinated people, if increases in infections do not translate into huge numbers of patients in hospitals, no restrictions will be needed. You have to be rational about it. We encourage everyone to vaccinate, we appeal, but we will not force the reluctant ones – added a specialist in childhood infectious diseases.
She admitted that there are regions in Poland where the level of vaccination is lower. – There, the community brings a greater risk of infection outbreaks on itself – concluded the expert.
She repeated once again that any restrictions should no longer apply to vaccinated people, as this would completely undermine the sense of the vaccination program.
