Sleep with or without panties? that is the question
– An issue formulated in such a way may actually evoke a slight smile at first. The culture of sleeping in underwear is perceived slightly differently in different countries and, for example, in Western Europe few women think of sleeping in panties. And this is by no means healthy – analyzes Dr. Zofia Borowiec, MD, a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics.
Why? Because when we sleep without underwear, the production of mucus decreases, and the mucus that is formed dries up most of the time. The free flow of air has a positive effect on the health of the intimate parts, because yeasts and bacteria are more likely to develop and multiply in wet places.
Mucus is a natural vaginal discharge that a physiological substance produced by the vaginal mucosa and glands in the vagina, the vestibule and the cervix. And it performs many extremely useful functions.
- What to sleep in in hot weather? This is the healthiest and most convenient option
Sleeping in panties. What harms us at night?
Thanks to this secretion, the female body can cleanse its reproductive system of unnecessary substances: bacteria or dead cells. In addition, it prepares for individual phases of the menstrual cycle, maintains the correct pH of the vagina, prevents intimate infections and generally informs about the health condition. She’s sexy too! Without mucus, erotic relationships are painful and lead to microtraumas of the mucosa and the delicate skin of the intimate areas.
– In a healthy woman, vaginal discharge may be clear, whitish or light cream. It has a homogeneous consistency and a neutral smell. It is all completely natural and should not cause you any concern. However, influenced by the ubiquitous advertising, girls and women are convinced that they should wear panty liners every day, otherwise they are “dirty”. In my office, I see more and more patients who are worried about “excessive” mucus discharge from the vagina. They do not accept it, so they sleep in their underwear, often additionally equipped with these unfortunate inserts at night. It really hurts! – explains Dr. Borowiec.
Of course, when the typical features of an infection appear: a different smell, reddened skin or pain, the situation requires urgent consultation with a specialist.
They irritate panties and more
According to the Wroclaw doctor, there is a lot of catching up to do when it comes to the daily hygiene of intimate places, including the choice of sleepwear, especially among young people.
– You should talk about it during educational hours, family life or biology lessons. Mothers of young people should also be told that this discharge is good for us, protects us and cannot be fought. Unfortunately, it happens that patients do not even believe doctors – adds the doctor.
Importantly, if the intimate area is irritated day and night by a foreign body such as underwear, the production of mucus increases. And this is a simple way to get lost in the maze of errors.
– In addition, we most often wash underwear in perfumed powders, rinse in fragrant liquids. We also like lace panties, which are not friendly to the vulva and vaginal area, and we epilate these areas and wash them with numerous intimate hygiene cosmetics. All this irritates the delicate skin of female organs, dries it out and can lead to allergies and infections. So let’s wear lace, epilate, take care. But wisely and in moderation. And necessarily with the “silence at night” – warns Dr. Borowiec.
For everyday care, it is worth using the Green Laboratory intimate cleansing cream, which thanks to natural ingredients such as origanol from tea tree oil or bergamot oil helps to prevent intimate infections and skin irritation. You can also try the VAGOFIX Women’s Rinse, which has an astringent effect and soothes irritations. We also recommend:

Underwear for the night? What to sleep in?
The doctor advises to wear a cotton nightgown or pajamas for the night – if we do not like to sleep naked -.
– But it should be loose, not like tight leggings. This is the healthiest and simplest for us. Let’s give our intimate areas a break from any irritation, even at night. It’s like wearing a face mask in a pandemic: non-stop, non-stop. Does anyone like it? The skin certainly does not, the gynecologist advises.
Men should also take these recommendations to heart and wear loose-fitting pajama pants or boxer shorts when they go to sleep. Their testicles are not accidentally located outside the body, in the scrotum: the testicles require a slightly lower temperature for the proper production of semen, and overheating the testicles with tight underwear deteriorates the quality of sperm.
For everyday care of intimate places, we recommend BIO gel for intimate hygiene with Propolia BeeYes propolis, which moisturizes and soothes irritations.
