Why you need a mask for damaged hair

This article is not for the lucky ones who are one hundred percent happy with the condition of their hair, but for everyone else (we suspect that we are the vast majority). We tell you how to quickly and effectively put your hair in order. For help, turn to masks for damaged hair.

The benefits of masks for damaged hair

Let’s first decide what is wrong with the hair. Answer a few simple questions to understand how much you need masks to restore severely damaged hair.
  1. Do you think you have dry hair?

  2. Is your hair frizzy?

  3. After combing, do the curls become electrified?

  4. Are there split ends?

  5. Has your hair become dull?

  6. Are you noticing signs of hair breakage?

  7. The result of laying is not always happy?

  8. Do you often use hot styling tools?

If the answer to most questions is yes, your hair is most likely damaged and in need of rehabilitation measures, which primarily involve competent and regular care. And restorative masks for hair care, along with shampoo, conditioner, balm and leave-in care, are an important point of the program. Usually on the masks you need they write:
  • for dry and damaged hair;

  • restoring;

  • reanimating;

  • revitalizing;

  • strengthening;

  • intensively nourishing;

  • for colored hair.

As a rule, such products contain more moisturizing and nourishing components than conventional masks. And that’s why.
The condition of our hair is directly dependent on the condition of the cuticle, which is a sequence of overlapping keratin scales, held together by a lipid substance. Normally, the scales are tightly linked, the cuticle is smooth and reflects light well – then the hair is smooth and shiny. However, for various reasons, the structure of the cuticle is disturbed, damage is formed. All this leads to a deterioration in the condition of the hair – smoothness disappears, light is poorly reflected, the hair becomes dull and dry.

There are many reasons: from exposure to ultraviolet radiation, dyeing and hot temperatures during drying and styling to stress, the lack of a full daily regimen and a balanced diet.

  • moisturize hair;

How to choose a nourishing mask for severely damaged hair

It is not difficult to understand which mask for severely damaged hair you need specifically. The main thing here is to soberly assess the condition of the hair and clearly understand what problem needs to be solved.

  • The easiest way, of course, is for girls with dyed hair – such strands always need to be restored. They are suitable for masks for colored hair, which take care of both the preservation of color and the restoration of hair quality.

  • For dry hair, a mask for dry and damaged hair is the right choice.

  • If you have recently become the owner of cheerful curls, then restoring and revitalizing masks will be the best solution, since there is simply no separate product labeled as a mask for chemically damaged hair, in any case, we could not find such a remedy.

How to use revitalizing hair masks

They use restorative masks in the same way as conditioners, only the exposure time on the hair for masks will be longer. Do not apply these products to the scalp and root zone – and rinse thoroughly. There are instructions on the packaging of each cosmetic product, and it is wise to follow them, especially in matters of application method and exposure time of the mask on the hair. If there is no instruction, then you can use our life hack:

  • apply a mask on the hair, starting from the middle and ending with the tips (usually this area is the most damaged);

  • wet a towel with hot water;

  • wrap your hair in this towel;

  • cover with a dry towel on top so that the wet does not cool so quickly;

  • wash off the mask after 5 minutes.

So we imitate the effect of a steam bath, which enhances the effect of a cosmetic product.

And here is how our expert Evgeny Sedoy recommends applying a mask for damaged hair.

“A mask for damaged hair is applied to damp, or better, to wet hair. In this case, there is no risk of overspending the product. The mask will be distributed evenly over the surface of the hair, and will not fall on any separate areas. Plus, you don’t have to comb your hair with a comb to distribute your mask or conditioner. Do I need to wash off the mask with shampoo? Not! All masks are applied to well-cleansed hair. The only thing to do after the mask is to rinse your hair thoroughly with running water.

And an addition from Maria Nevskaya.

  • Apply the mask to wet hair washed with warm water (to open the scales).

  • Keep the mask under a cap and a towel (you need a greenhouse effect).

  • Wash off the mask after the hair has cooled down.

  • At the end of the procedure, I recommend using a conditioner to close the hair scales.

Are homemade hair masks effective?

It is rather difficult to answer the question of how effective home masks are for hair restoration. On the one hand, yes. If you know exactly what components are necessary for hair rehabilitation and mix them in the right proportions, while using fresh and high-quality products, there are no questions. The main emphasis, as we have already said, will be on vegetable oils.

But on the other hand, in ready-made cosmetic masks, the concentration of active substances is verified by scientific laboratories, which also conduct research on the effectiveness and safety of the product. In ready-made cosmetics, you can find components such as vegetable keratin, phylloxan and the like, that is, ingredients that are guaranteed to restore and strengthen hair. You can’t add this to a homemade homemade mask.

Nevertheless, the trend for hand-made cosmetics continues to gain momentum, and there are more and more people who want to cook according to homemade recipes. We also succumbed to the popular temptation and decided to prepare a couple of hair masks. To be honest, a lot of time was spent, but the expected effect was not impressive. By the way, if you have proven recipes for homemade repair masks for damaged hair, share them in the comments.

Mask with olive oil and sea buckthorn

Heat a tablespoon of olive oil without boiling. Add sea buckthorn extract (10 ml) to it. Mix everything thoroughly and apply the composition to clean, damp hair. Put on a shower cap. Wash off after 30-40 minutes. Dry ends will become more vibrant.

Mask with honey and onion

Take a tablespoon of honey and heat it until liquid. On a fine grater, grate half the onion, squeeze the juice and add it to honey. For a nicer texture, add a teaspoon of warm olive oil to the mixture. Apply the composition to damp hair, wrap it with a terry towel and leave for 60 minutes. Rinse well with warm water. After such a mask, the hair will become soft and shiny.
