Why you can’t name a child after a deceased relative

Why you can’t name a child after a deceased relative

It would seem that this is just superstition. But behind it, as well as behind many traditions, there are quite rational reasons.

“I’ll name my daughter Nastya,” says my friend Anya, gently stroking herself on the stomach.

Nastya is a great name. But for some reason I have a frost on my skin: that was the name of Anya’s dead sister. She died as a child. Car hit. And now Anya is going to name her daughter in her honor …

Anya is not alone. Many call the baby the same as the name of a deceased young relative or even an older child whom they have lost.

Psychologists say that in this case, there is a substitution at the level of perception. Subconsciously, parents perceive the birth of a baby with the same name as the return or reincarnation of a deceased person, which has a negative impact on the fate of the child.

Also, you should not give the girl the mother’s name, and the boy the father’s name. It is believed that namesakes will not be able to get along under one roof. And they will also have one guardian angel for two. Calling the daughter by the mother’s name, one can expect a repetition of the mother’s fate. In addition, the mother’s influence on a woman always remains quite strong, even if the daughter is already an adult, has given birth to her children, and even if the mother is no longer alive. The influence of the namesake mother is enormous and can prevent a daughter from living her own life.

In general, the choice of a name should be approached very carefully. Therefore, we have collected five more types of names that should not be given to children.

In honor of literary and biblical heroes

The temptation to name a child by the name of a character in a favorite book or movie is very great. In Soviet times, people read War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy and Eugene Onegin by Pushkin, and many girls in the USSR were named after the heroines of these books – Natasha and Tatiana. These names have long been included in the Russian tradition. However, there were also less attractive options. In 2015, Russians supported the Western trend and began naming their children after the characters in the successful Game of Thrones TV series. Among them are Arya (this is the name of one of the main heroines of the history of the Seven Kingdoms), Theon, Varis and Petyr. If you adhere to the theory that a name brings certain qualities to a person’s personality, then you need to keep in mind that the fate of these heroes is difficult, you cannot call it happy. Arya is a girl constantly struggling to survive. Theon is a spineless character, a traitor.

In addition, there are cases when parents named their son Lucifer or Jesus. Such names are regarded as blasphemy.

Associated with unpleasant associations

At first glance, it seems strange to call your baby a name with which mom or dad has unpleasant associations. But this happens when one parent is persistent in choosing a name. For example, mom always dreamed of calling her son Dima, and for dad Dima was a bully who beat him mercilessly at school.

In such cases, it is still better to agree on a name that will suit both parents. After all, there is a possibility that you will take out all the negative emotions towards the owner of the name you hate on the child.

Some parents specially select rare and beautiful names for their child. Especially creative people who think creatively are fond of this. There are different theories about the influence of an exotic name on a person’s fate. And you can believe them or not, but the fact that not all foreign names go well with a patronymic or surname is for sure. The little girl will grow up, become an adult, most likely, change her surname after marriage. And, for example, Mercedes Viktorovna Kislenko will appear. Or Gretchen Mikhailovna Kharitonova. In addition, rare names are not always suitable for appearance.

In honor of historical figures

Another not very good option would be names in honor of famous politicians and historical figures. You can guess how they will treat a boy named Adolf. And, by the way, not only in our country. This German name, after well-known historical events, is not very popular even in Germany.

When you call your child a very bright and unusual name, do not be too lazy to find out if there was in the history of its owner, who left behind an unpleasant informational “trail”.

Names with political connotations

Hardly anyone can be surprised by such names as Vladlen (Vladimir Lenin), Stalin, Dazdraperma (long live May Day), etc. They were known in Soviet times. However, even today there are patriotic names. For example, a girl who was born on June 12, Russia Day, was named Russia.

But since May 1, 2017, it is officially forbidden to give a child invented names. Now a person’s name cannot contain numbers and signs, except for a hyphen. There was a case when parents named their son BOCh rVF on 26.06.2002. This strange abbreviation means Human Biological Object of the Voronin-Frolov family, and the numbers mean the date of birth. You cannot use profanity either.
