In beauty blogs, the best compliment to a gel or foam cleanser is “cleans to a squeak.” But there is nothing good in such a result. Read our article and you will understand why.
Why washing is necessary for the skin
After removing make-up (in the evening) or after sleeping (in the morning), we wash our face in order to properly cleanse the top layer of the skin – the epidermis. It partially consists of keratinized cells, they are also corneocytes. These cells are connected by a lipid layer, which is crowned with a hydrolipidic mantle with a slightly acidic pH.
The mantle is formed by sebum, sweat, microflora and lactic acid – an important component of the skin’s moisturizing factor (NMF). Together, this is the much-needed skin barrier.
Find out which cleanser is right for you with our quiz.
By removing impurities and excess sebum when washing, we give the skin the opportunity to breathe, renew itself and absorb the beneficial ingredients of care products well.
When choosing a cleanser, you need to focus on the type of skin.

The danger of over-cleansing
The hydrolipidic mantle of the skin can be injured. This happens in the following cases.
- Using too aggressive or incorrectly selected means.
- Cleansing more than twice a day.
- Washing with too cold or very hot water.
As a result of the weakening of the mantle, pH shifts towards alkali.
- The skin becomes sensitive, irritated, dehydrated. Consequence – redness, peeling, feeling of tightness, itching.
- The sebaceous glands receive an alarm signal and begin to “close up” the damaged tissue, producing even more sebum. Result – greasy shine in the T-zone, and then comedones and acne.
- In an alkaline environment, even a weak one, harmful bacteria and fungus actively develop. As a result, there are inflammation, dermatitis.
- The epidermis protects itself and thickens the stratum corneum. This is fraught hyperkeratosis.
For dry, normal and sensitive skin, foam is suitable for washing.

Rules for daily washing
Once again, we recall that when choosing a cleanser, you need to focus on the type of skin.
- Dry skin needs delicate oily or creamy textures: milk with moisturizing ingredients, foam.
- Combination and oily – gel, ideally with acids for light peeling.
- Normal and sensitive – foam.
- Micellar water is suitable for any skin type.
It is best to wash your face no more than twice a day. In this case, the water should be at a comfortable temperature, that is, not higher than 40 ° C. End the cleansing procedure with a tonic to restore the pH balance.
