What when the little boy protests and worried parents don’t really know why he doesn’t sleep. The baby won’t say what he means, the parents have to find out for themselves. How to create optimal conditions for sleep, what are the causes of insomnia in such a small child? How to teach your baby to fall asleep peacefully and not wake up every hour?

Why does the baby not want to sleep?

There can be many causes of insomnia in a baby, they usually relate to the environment, the place where the baby falls asleep, a poorly placed blanket. The temperature in the room may also be to blame. The uncomfortable position in which we put the baby can also be the reason for insomnia or restless sleep. The baby will not turn over on its own and will not correct the blanket or duvet, but will show its dissatisfaction by crying or lack of sleep. 

How to make a baby sleep soundly?

Toddlers who sleep restlessly can be helped by creating conditions as close as possible to the place where they spent nine months – i.e. the uterus.

Let’s take care of a few things that will help:

  • A cozy place to sleep – a cot is a great invention, but in the first weeks of life, a toddler needs a much smaller and thus cozier space. An excellent solution is a cradle or a wicker basket on wheels. It is mobile, it can be moved conveniently so that the baby feels close to its mother. Instead of covering your baby with a blanket, wrap them in a quilt or sleeping bag.
  • Too hot or too cold – Inappropriate temperature can disturb sleep. It is important that the room is ventilated and not too hot. The optimum temperature is 21 degrees.
  • Baby rocking The way your baby sleeps is as important as the conditions in which he sleeps. It is not worth getting children used to constantly rocking on their hands, because it may turn out that the baby will not want to fall asleep on his own. During the nine months in the womb, the baby felt a slight sway and this allowed him to fall asleep. Now also light rocking, rocking or swinging can help, but in reasonable proportions.
  • Soothing sounds – it is not true that a child falls asleep best in complete silence. In the womb, he heard rumblings or voices from the environment all the time, it allowed him to calm down. Now let’s also provide him with stimuli such as music from the radio, sung lullaby, music box or ordinary sounds of the house. Let’s not tiptoe.
  • Isolation – Babies sleep best when they are alone in the room, although of course this is not the rule. This is more about you than the baby. This will eliminate the desire to lift the baby in your arms and rock it as soon as it moves slightly and whimpers. You will always hear a loud cry calling for mom or dad to the rescue.
  • Rhythm and ritual — it is important to accustom the child to certain times of sleeping, eating or bathing from birth. Children who are accustomed to a certain rhythm of day and night sleep better. During the day, let’s not cover the windows and let’s not be quieter than usual, and at night, let’s create the most optimal conditions for sleep. Feed and bathe your baby at the same time to avoid disturbing your baby’s rhythm. Let’s provide the child with a certain amount of sleep during the day, it is not true that if the toddler does not sleep during the day, then he will sleep at night. The contrast between day and night should be noted.
