Why we refuse vacation: two opposing motives

Summer automatically includes in us the desire to relax. Unfortunately, not everyone gets this opportunity. It happens that you have to spend all three months at work … How, in this case, continue to enjoy life and not hate those who still waited for the holidays? The psychologist says.

Once upon a time, back in school, we got used to the program, according to which summer automatically means rest, holidays. It’s great when you know that you have to study for nine months, and then you can relax and not think about anything!

We were children then, and adults decided a lot for us. But now adults are ourselves. And age makes its own adjustments: rarely anyone manages to relax all summer long, and some have to give up vacation altogether.

However, growing up has advantages: now we are responsible for any choice in our life. Including we are responsible for how to respond to certain events. After all, as the well-known aphorism says, “if you can’t change the situation, change your attitude towards it.”

We’re not going anywhere

To learn how to calmly respond to the stories of happy vacationers, let’s take the first step and figure out why you were left without a vacation this summer. Or rather, find out how you yourself determine this reason for yourself.

When we internally believe that “it happened, and it doesn’t depend on me,” or that “it’s just necessary,” we automatically take the position of a victim. We return to the state of a child, for whom “adult aunts and uncles” decide everything.

In this position, we are helpless beings who have no control over our lives. And it seems that some external forces leave us without a vacation. We show violence to ourselves, even more offended by ourselves, the world and others. In addition, this is a direct path to burnout or procrastination.

Why? Due to the fact that there is not enough own motivation (after all, we talk about the lack of vacation as a necessity — “it’s necessary”), work efficiency decreases. We make mistakes and drown in guilt, and therefore we put even more pressure on ourselves, become more and more dissatisfied with ourselves.

So we begin to hate ourselves, and work, and those who are now resting, enjoying life. But who really needs your suffering and why? And are they needed at all?

If you have canceled your vacation for the reasons listed above, you are most likely experiencing:

  • fatigue from the fact that you have to limit yourself (“I’ll relax someday, but now I need to be patient”);
  • resentment towards circumstances and people;
  • envy of vacationers;
  • inability to take care of yourself every day;
  • lack of energy and desires;
  • the desire to escape from reality (including with the participation of various kinds of addictions);
  • developing burnout and hatred for work.

Refusal as a conscious choice

Anyone who realizes that he makes every choice in his life on his own, refuses to leave for other reasons. The basis of this strategy will be the word «important». When you clearly understand what your true values ​​are and why it is important for you to give up your summer vacation this year, it turns out to be a completely different story.

For example, it is important for you to complete the project in the summer, or you just started a new job. It is clear that in this case it is too early to think about rest. However, it is still important to have a high level of energy, to be happy. So, it is important to combine work and leisure.

Perhaps you can find time for a walk in the park during the day, and in the evenings and weekends, come up with different ways to relax in nature in the city where you live. Maybe you’ll learn rollerblading or cycling and enjoy riding in your spare time. Or find a new interesting hobby.

You need to understand what is important to you. When you realize that both your affairs and health are of great value to you, the brain itself will focus on solving these problems, and you will approach them as constructively as possible. Thus you:

  • maintain a balance of tension and relaxation;
  • develop creative thinking to combine business and personal life;
  • fill the summer days with joy;
  • you will live an interesting and rich life.

As you can see, with just one word, you can completely change the state, behavior and consequences of your actions. Even without a vacation, you can still be truly happy. After all, happiness is being actively involved in every moment of your life, wherever you are this summer.

If we tend to look at life from the perspective of a victim, we can feel bad even at the most luxurious resort. Surely you know people who always return from vacation dissatisfied and dissatisfied.

Of course, it is up to you to decide how to treat your particular circumstances. The main thing is to realize that this is your responsibility. Choose wisely and let this summer be the best for you, wherever you spend it!
