Psychologist Abigail Mansfield (Abigail Mansfield) and her colleagues named ten common reasons1for which we hesitate to ask for advice or help.

  • We are afraid to jeopardize our independence.
  • We see asking for help as a weakness.
  • We are afraid to show others that something is not working out for us.
  • We are afraid that we will be denied.
  • We are afraid of being pushy.
  • We don’t want to hand over responsibility for our lives to others.
  • Our problems seem insignificant to us.
  • We don’t want to be in someone’s debt.
  • We don’t want others to know that we have problems.
  • We like to feel that we can do without someone else’s help.
