Why the pump of the washing machine does not work, what to do

Usually, the user suspects a pump failure when they take out wet laundry from the tank. Sometimes the wash stops short of spinning with a full drum of water.

Do not rush to immediately replace the drain pump, perhaps the cause of the breakdown lies elsewhere. To confirm the guesses, you need to diagnose the parts of the washing machine.

Causes and signs of breakage

How to make sure that the pump in the washing machine is not working? It is necessary to inspect and eliminate the malfunction of other parts. First, pay attention to the external signs of damage:

  1. An error code appeared on the CMA display. After reading its meaning, you understand that the reason is a malfunction of the pump or drain system.
  2. The wash cycle runs as usual, but before draining, the machine stops with a full tank of water.
  3. The pump does not turn on at all.
  4. The pump runs constantly, without stopping.
  5. Water drains very slowly.
  6. Draining occurs every other time, not after every wash.

Start looking for the cause of the problem with a simple check:

  • Make sure spin mode is on. If the “Delicate or Hand wash” program has been selected, the spin cycle is switched off automatically. Select another program or increase the spin speed.
  • Check the drain hose. It should be level, no higher than the level of the tank. If it is not kinked, it is advisable to disconnect the hose and check for blockage. Turn on the drain mode by directing the hose into the sink. If the water flows out normally, the sewer may be clogged.

If you are sure that the mode is set correctly, you need to check the drain.

  • Open the small hatch under the front panel.
  • Substitute the container, unscrew the drain filter.
  • Drain the water and clean the filter of debris.
  • Shine a light into the hole in the housing where the filter was located.
  • Inspect the pump impeller. Select spin and see if the impeller is spinning or not.

If the impeller has not fallen off and is in place, you need to check the pump. At the same time, the drain pipe is inspected.

How to get to the pump in different brands of CMA

Knowing where the pump is located will help you get to it quickly.

In the CM models “Samsung”, “Kandy”, “Ariston”, “Indesit”, Beko, Whirlpool, LG, you need to put the washer on its side and get close to the pump through the bottom. How to do it:

  1. The machine is disconnected from the network and communications.
  2. Water drains from the filter.
  3. The dispenser tray is removed from the housing. It also needs to drain the rest of the water.
  4. The car lays neatly on its side. In order not to damage the case, you can lay a blanket on the floor.

In the brands of washing machines “Zanussi” and “Electrolux” you need to remove the back cover:

  1. After disconnecting all communications around the perimeter of the rear panel, all screws are unscrewed.
  2. In some models, the screws are hidden by plugs. They can be removed with a screwdriver.
  3. The panel is pushed aside and inspection begins.

It is longer and more difficult to get close to the pump in the Bosch, Siemens, AEG models. Need to remove the front panel:

  1. The top cover is removed from the body of the machine.
  2. The dispenser tray is pulled out.
  3. Unscrew and remove the control panel.
  4. The latches are released, the plinth panel is removed.
  5. The collar of the cuff of the hatch is separated. The cuff is refilled into the tank.
  6. The door lock bolts are loosened.
  7. The bolts securing the panel are unscrewed, and it is removed from the case.

How to solve two main problems

Inspect and check the details if the machine not only flows, but also does not work or, conversely, works without interruption.

The pump is leaking, the washing machine is not working

Have you noticed that the bottom cover of the washing machine is leaking? Water can flow from below directly onto the floor. Then it is obvious that the pump is broken.

When you get to the pump, do this:

  • Check the drain pipe, it may be defective and leaking. It could be damaged, or the clamp between the pipe and the pump was loose.
  • Unscrew the pipe bolt and open the clamp with pliers.
  • Remove it and inspect for blockage and damage. When the nozzle becomes clogged, this causes the washing machine not to drain the water.
  • Now disconnect the wiring from the pump.
  • Unscrew the fasteners and remove it from the case.

Examine the pump. Often, hair and threads are wound around the impeller, due to which the pump wedges and it does not pump water.

The pump cover is unscrewed – unscrew a few screws. Remove the snail. Check all gaskets for integrity.

You can check if the pump has burnt out with a multimeter by measuring the resistance on the windings.

The pump does not turn off, it works without stopping

When the pump runs without shutting down, the problem may be in the control module. The electronic board controls the operation of all parts in the washing machine, and if it fails, similar problems are likely.

Breakage of the pressure switch, as well as the board, can cause problems with the pump. For example, when the pressure switch does not provide information about the amount of water in the tank, the module “does not know” that it needs to be drained. Consequently, the pump does not turn on or runs without stopping, as if there is water in the tank.

It is better to entrust the check and replacement of the board to specialists, but the pressure switch can be replaced independently.

  • After removing the top cover from the machine, near the wall you will find a pressure switch.
  • After disconnecting its tubes, check them for blockage, perhaps after cleaning the device will work normally.
  • Unscrew the mounting bolt and remove the device from the tank.

Replacement is carried out in the reverse order.

Proper maintenance will help prevent breakdowns.

Save your washer following the manufacturer’s instructions:

  1. Do not overload the drum with laundry. Load the prescribed rate, otherwise the CMA parts will wear out, and things will not wash normally.
  2. Always check clothing pockets before washing. Coins or seeds provoke clogging of the drain system.
  3. At least once a month, clean the drain filter from debris.
  4. Choose the right mode for each fabric. You should not constantly use a quick and intensive wash. This leads to wear on the bearings and the formation of mold, since the fast mode takes place in cold water.

When it comes to clogging the system, the problem can be solved independently. But if the cause is in the module or pump, for accurate diagnosis it is better to call the wizard.
