Why should you follow your treatment to the end?

France remains one of the most consuming countries of pharmaceuticals in Europe with an annual average of 48 boxes of medicines per inhabitant 1, 40% of which go to people over 60.2  According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, drugs are ranked second in health spending in Canada.3

These data are interesting because they reveal to us the importance of medicinal substances in modern societies. Although they are intriguing, these figures tell us about the sales but not about theuse of treatments.

How are the drugs consumed?

This question raises a major public health problem, since a poor medication adherence entails risks for the patient and represents a certain cost, which is why it is important to follow his treatment to the end.

“Doctor, I’m afraid to undergo treatment”

Medical treatment can be scary, especially when it is of indefinite duration, this is the case of people with chronic diseases as’hypertension, the troubles cardiovascular, diabetes… The reactions of the patient to the drug are diverse and can also depend on the confidence that the latter places in his doctor. Side effects, the composition and manufacture of generics, the risks of drug interactions, the acceptance and understanding of the disease are all legitimate realities that the patient must face.

Healthcare professional patient relationship: nothing better than transparency

Doubting and worrying are normal phenomena, the reason why it is important to dialogue, to question, to communicate with your healthcare professional.

Whatever the reasons for accepting or refusing the traitement, the choice is up to the patient, it is up to them to make the final decision. The most important thing is to be sure that you want to take this treatment. The less confidence you have in your treatment, the less rigorous you will be in taking it.

It is essential to express yourself concretely and in complete transparency on your impressions, on what is causing you a problem and on your feelings about the treatment with your doctor. If you have any doubts or if the side effects are bothersome, speak up quickly. Exchange and dialogue will only benefit you. Tell your healthcare professional if you have any other health concerns: allergies, infections, or if you have taken any other medicines self-medication, even if it seems trivial to you.

Poor therapeutic adherence: harmful consequences

La compliance or rather thetherapeutic adherence is defined in the behavior that the patient will have vis-à-vis his prescription. Thus, we will assess the rigor of treatment monitoring in:

  • its dosage,
  • its taking times,
  • the rules of hygiene and diet,
  • respect for the duration of treatment.

A person who forgets:

  • to take medication at least once a week,
  • whose intake times are too out of date,
  • not combining the right diet if necessary,
  • not renewing his prescription in due time,
  • not honoring his regular appointments if necessary with his health professional,

is a person lacking in observance likely to endanger his state of health.

According to the WHO report4, in developed countries the rigor ofmedication adherence is only valid for 50% of chronically ill patients, this low rate would be even more so in developing countries. However, for a treatment to be effective, it is better to show compliance. Otherwise, there is a decrease and a nuisance in the patient’s quality of life while increasing the risk of the disease. In addition, in case of infection there is a strong possibility of infecting those around him if the treatment has not been followed to the end.

When the disease does not present any symptoms, it is the case of arterial hypertension for example, the patient has more difficulty accepting the initiation of treatment and he will not strictly comply with it, he could then dangerously amplify his condition. health.

Drug treatment and morbidity

  • 70% of people diabetics are not following the diet associated with their illness properly and 50% forget to take their medication at least once a week5. Poor monitoring of the person with diabetes leads to complications such as narrowing of the arteries or even diabetic ketoacidosis valid for the patient. 1 type diabetes (binding of glucose in the blood), a hyperosmolar state affecting the 2 type diabetes (accumulation of glucose in the blood). Considered medical priorities, these cases can be fatal and require emergency hospitalization.
  • A person with high blood pressure who decides to stop treatment abruptly because they do not notice the difference between their state of health with or without it, will see their blood pressure rise and are at significant risk of ‘Stroke (cerebrovascular accident) or infarction.
  • La drug it is the ability of a bacterium to defend itself against treatment.

Poor adherence is one of the most important causes of drug resistance, according to the World Health Organization (WHO)6.

The misuse of overdose, underdose and intermittent antimicrobials is the cause of drug resistance. So not respecting its treatment amounts to strengthening the attack of pathogenic bacteria (= harmful to the organism).

Health and legislation

The term treatment is defined by the action of treating meaning to cure. The healthcare professional provides treatment to the patient if he considers that his state of health requires it. According to the public health code, its prescription should be made with full knowledge of the facts based on a precise diagnosis in order to assess whether it corresponds to the pathology or disorders presented by the patient.

In theory, the prescription is not free from the prescriber but limited by the legislation of the public health code. With the development of the marketing of new drug treatments, the physician is required to follow strict regulations, in particular to avoid any drug interactions. This regulation concerns generic drugs, drugs with special prescription, drugs whether or not subject to market authorization (AMM). The Haute Autorité de Santé has implemented a protocol to guide healthcare professionals in their practice.

The pharmacist is required by law to respect the prescription of the prescribing health professional indicating the prohibition of substitution or generic.
