Why people get cancer: myths and truth

News about the next «source» of cancer appear in the media with enviable regularity. Many of them cause, if not fear, then confusion and misunderstanding. We give several such examples and explanations of a specialist.

Myth #1. Smartphones contribute to the development of cancer

In the wake of the growing popularity of smartphones, information began to spread about the terrible impact of radio waves. But in fact, it has never been confirmed that frequent use of mobile phones leads to brain tumors.

Myth #2. GMOs and sugar are dangerous carcinogens

Some products have also acquired a bad reputation. First of all, it is GMO. However, as with smartphones, there is no scientific evidence that genetically modified food leads to cancer.

Another common food myth has to do with sugar. Presumably, its consumption in large quantities turns into the development of cancer cells. There is some truth in this statement, although it is distorted. In fact, sugar does not lead to cancer, but excess sugar can cause conditions (such as diabetes) that increase the likelihood of developing the disease.

In this regard, it is very important to monitor the state of the body as a whole: regularly undergo medical examinations, take tests prescribed by specialists and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Myth #3. Cancer is an infectious disease

There is also a misconception in society that cancer is contagious. For this to be true, cancer must be an infectious disease that can be caused by a bacterium or a virus. And although the mechanism of the formation of cancer cells in the body has not yet been fully understood, it is known for sure that oncology does not apply to diseases transmitted by contact, including through blood.

At the same time, some viruses cause diseases that can later develop into cancer. Among them are human papillomavirus types 16 and 18, Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis B and C virus, and herpes virus type 8. The good news is that you can protect yourself against some of these viruses through timely vaccination. For example, the hepatitis B vaccine can reduce the risk of developing liver cancer. And the rest of these viruses are effectively treated.

Myth number 4. The cause of cancer is age

According to another myth, cancer is an age-related disease. In the scientific community, on the contrary, it is generally accepted that cancer is “younger”. However, some experts explain the increase in the number of young patients by the fact that they learned to diagnose the disease at earlier stages and at an earlier age.

One way or another, it is necessary to monitor your health at any age, because timely medical examinations can either save you from unnecessary worries, or help maintain your health, and in some cases literally save your life.

The development of a malignant tumor is a matter of many months and even years. Therefore, regular examinations (but without excessive obsession) can significantly increase the chances of a successful recovery if the disease nevertheless overtakes, or simply confirm that everything is in order with you and there is nothing to worry about.
