Why is the skin on the legs dry and flaky in winter?

No sooner had the cold set in, as if your feet were sprinkled with flour? If the creams don’t work, check your wardrobe to see if it’s between you and smooth skin. Here are five of the most common winter styling mistakes that lead to dry knees and shins.

Fans of skinny pants, skirts, tight-fitting tights, tight socks and stockings are advised to choose looser styles: tight-fitting clothes and underwear squeeze blood vessels. Hence the dryness, because without normal blood circulation, the upper layer of the skin does not receive the necessary nutrition, dies off faster and disappears in the form of peeling. So loose joggers and jeans, classic trousers, straight skirts and pleats are great choices in cold weather.

Even if the pants are very nice and fit like a glove, be sure to check the composition. If synthetic materials predominate, leave them in the off-season. Unnatural fabrics “hit” on two points at once: firstly, they disrupt moisture and air exchange, and this threatens dryness. Secondly, outfits made of polyester or elastane have a rough structure that rubs against the legs and provokes peeling. However, do not rush to buy new woolen clothes: they can also prick and dry the skin. But soft cashmere, cotton, thick silk and viscose – green light!

It’s a shame, but the coziest couple may be responsible for flaky shins. True, not only she is to blame: if you spend the whole day in a heated room without taking off your warm shoes (especially high boots), then you risk saying goodbye to smooth skin. Even a natural fur or felt lining prevents air from circulating and cooling your feet, which can lead to at least dryness.

An even less pleasant outcome is the smell from the feet, irritation and brittle nails. True, the problem is easy to solve: bring a spare pair of shoes to work and change your shoes as soon as you get to the office.

Avid women of fashion often abandon warmth in favor of style, and in vain. As we mentioned above, constant hypothermia and temperature jumps are one of the main enemies of the well-being and skin of the legs. If you really want to walk new demi-season ankle boots or boots, pair them with warm insoles or wear them with woolen socks. Forget about thin nylon tights in winter: this is not only an anti-trend, but also a real health hazard. Instead, you can experiment with dense ones, especially now in stores there is a huge selection of interesting options for every taste, from bright monophonic ones to models with stylish prints.

Often times, dry skin is not caused by the clothes, but by the way you take care of it. If after a day in freshly washed trousers you want to comb your legs, there is a feeling of tightness, redness and irritated areas appear, perhaps it is allergic reaction to powder or rinse aid… Take a test: Apply the product to clean skin and see how it behaves. Are the symptoms recurring? Change household chemicals, choose hypoallergenic or intended for baby clothes. By the way, do not abuse the antistatic agent, the skin can also react to it with dryness.

How to deal with dry skin: simple tips for every day

  • Thoroughly moisturize the skin at least twice a day (morning and evening) or after every shower.

  • Light body lotions should be replaced with fatty creams and oils for deeper hydration.

  • Soap and shower gels should be replaced with special oils and foams (cream).

  • It is necessary to monitor the diet, which should consist of vegetables, fruits, cereals and fish.

  • Particular attention should be paid to maintaining the water balance.
