Why is my right hand numb? – read the doctor’s answer

Ladies and Gentlemen, in the case of numbness of the hand itself (not to be confused with the upper limb), a very common cause is carpal tunnel syndrome. The disease is included in compression neuropathies that is, diseases in which the median nerve is damaged as a result of mechanical pressure.

You mentioned that you spend a lot of time in front of the computer in an unchanging position. Long-term resting of the wrists on the table top while typing on the keyboard predisposes to the development of the disease. Of course, this isn’t just about typing. All activities related to the same repeated movements of the wrist or fingers, such as cycling or playing instruments, predispose to the development of the disease.

The symptoms you mentioned, i.e. numbness, tingling or inertia, especially at night, are characteristic of the carpal tunnel syndrome. The most common is the involvement of the thumb, index finger and half of the middle finger, it is related to the innervation of these fingers mainly by the median nerve. Treatment can be conservative, involving the use of steroids, and surgery, which is much more effective.

You wrote that you also suffer from cervical spine pain. Disorders of this episode may also predispose to the development of the aforementioned symptoms. As a result of degenerative changes (especially in the elderly) and discopathy, the spinal nerves innervating the upper limbs are compressed.

Symptoms may be similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, but may include the rest of the upper limb in addition to the hand. In this case, sensory disturbances or muscle weakness may occur in the forearm or upper arm. Treatment is primarily surgical, although in some cases conservative treatment is also used.

In your case, I suggest you go to your GP who will refer you further. If he has suspicion of carpal tunnel syndrome, he will refer you to an orthopedist, in the case of suspicion of spinal diseases, a neurosurgical consultation will be needed.
