Why is it dangerous to drink babies

It turns out that even ordinary clean water can lead to poisoning.

The eternal dispute between grandmothers and mothers – to add water to the child or not? Grandmothers love to wrap up the baby even in the heat, and then give him water to drink, “because he is hot.”

Modern mothers, having read smart books, refuse to give their children a drink.

“At 1–2 months, drinking water can lead to breastfeeding, improper latching, painful feedings and a decrease in weight gain,” says pediatrician Anna Levadnaya.

“Before the introduction of complementary foods, that is, up to 6 months, breast milk, which is 80% water, perfectly replaces the baby and food and drink,” – assure the World Health Organization.

However, as it turned out, even after six months one should give the child water with great care, and even more so not to force the baby to drink. Otherwise, everything can end in water intoxication.

One young mom facing a similar experience shared her scary experience on Facebook. The woman said that she almost lost her 11-month-old daughter due to the fact that she gave her water.

“Water intoxication is real and can come so easily,” says young mother Katie Gorter. – I gave my daughter Emily only 60 ml of water a day. And usually she didn’t drink that either. However, yesterday Emily decided to drink the water from the bath while bathing. I did not attach any importance to this, but in the end our bathing ended in the hospital. “

The baby suddenly became lethargic, vomiting soon began, the girl began to choke.

“There was so much water in her that she squeezed her lungs!” Says Katie.

The next day, at the hospital, Emily’s condition improved, her breathing was restored, but the baby was still tormented by vomiting. When the girl was admitted to the doctors, the first thing they did was to check if water had entered the lungs. Maybe Emily choked while bathing? But no, what happened to the child was eventually recognized as water intoxication.

What is water intoxication?

Poisoning occurs when a person drinks too much water in a short period of time. Under such conditions, the level of sodium in the blood drops to a critical level, which can lead to vomiting, seizures, edema of the brain, lungs and even death.

Therefore, you need to drink water in small sips and in no case force yourself and the child.
