“Why don’t I celebrate the New Year?”: Readers’ stories

There is only one holiday that has united the peoples of all parts of the globe. And it’s called the New Year. In our country, this day is expected, loved and celebrated by everyone without exception. Or not all? We have collected the opinions of those people who do not at all consider the New Year an important holiday.

Vasily, 30 years old

“I believe that the New Year is all about commerce. Breaking your head buying gifts for the New Year, you just give the opportunity to shops to earn a fair amount. And the Snow Maiden, Santa Claus and other fairy-tale characters are only needed so that parents can recoup the fact that a whole year before that they were inattentive to the child.

Elena, 26 years old

“One day I just tried to spend the New Year like a regular Friday. My boyfriend and I ordered a pizza, turned on a movie and had a few drinks. Since then, the New Year has literally depreciated for us. Think for yourself: why celebrate the change of year? Why not celebrate the change of every day, the change of the Moon by the Sun, the change of spring in summer?”

Julia, 24 years old

“In our family, it is not customary to celebrate this holiday on a grand scale. For example, last year we just listened to the president’s congratulations and went to bed. In my life, there was no such thing that my friends and I hit the New Year celebration, rented a house, had a party … for me it’s strange. And the New Year is my least favorite holiday.

Oleg, 33 years old

“I don’t celebrate the New Year because the standard holiday with endless salads and blue lights repels me. I haven’t been able to find my own comfortable way to celebrate yet.”

Maxim, 30 years old

“I was born on the first of January. Do you already understand what I mean? The New Year has never been a special holiday for me, because against its background everyone forgets that it’s my birthday! If it wasn’t for my girlfriend, friends and parents, I would never have celebrated this holiday in my life.”

Alena, 36 years old

“To be honest, I just don’t see the point in this holiday. Seriously, why get together once a year and consume food and alcohol in excess? No, I don’t mind resting, but I won’t make a holiday out of it. On New Year’s Eve, I just read scientific papers and go to bed early—at least once a year, can I get eight hours of sleep?”

Alexander, 25 years old

“The New Year has ceased to be a holiday for me personally since 2014. My parents constantly quarreled, and on this day they quarreled especially strongly, and then divorced altogether. I love the New Year and would like to celebrate it, but for me it has ceased to be associated with a bright holiday.”

Sofia, 27 years old

“In general, the New Year comes from December 21 to 22. This is the day of the winter solstice, the longest night, after which the astronomical year actually changes, the solar day increases. But I also have personal reasons not to celebrate this holiday: I don’t like the atmosphere of eternally drunk and lost people, and for some reason, bad events of my life fall on this holiday. For example, last New Year my friend found out that she was seriously ill.”

Olga, 35 years

“I don’t celebrate New Year’s because it’s a holiday for everyone. And I don’t like holidays and I don’t like to be like everyone else. I always felt different, I differ in my views on the world from the majority. So it is here: I do not consider the transition to the next calendar year to be something global, and even more so an occasion for unrestrained fun or drinking alcohol.
