Why does the refrigerator light flash when turned on?

When the refrigerator breaks down, there are a lot of problems that only masters can solve. But some of them you can handle on your own. If the light is flashing in the refrigerator, you can fix the failure on your own.

Consider what to do if the light blinks or does not light at all.

No light in fridge

In older models, the lamps are built into the ceiling of the refrigerator compartment, near the thermostat. To make the lamp work when the door is opened, there is a special key. When the button is clamped by a closed door, the light is off; when the door is open and the button is released, the light appears.

Modern models are predominantly LED backlight. Such a lighting scheme is more convenient and economical, but access to it is complicated. Therefore, if an ordinary lamp does not light or blinks, you can fix the breakdown yourself, and you should entrust the installation of a new LED strip to a specialist.

Why is the light not on

To understand why the light blinks in an existing refrigerator, it is not enough to read the instructions, you will need electrical knowledge and personal experience. A complex of technical factors is often to blame for a problem with light. Replacing the lamp can break this “chain”, and the refrigerator will need a major overhaul.

So start with diagnostics:

  • arm yourself with a saw;
  • measure the resistance – check the voltage at the contacts.

The check shows that no electricity is supplied to the contacts, and the failure of the lamp is not to blame for the breakdown? It is necessary to carry out maintenance of sealed contacts that respond to fluctuations in magnetic fields.

Important! Sometimes problems with light begin due to a malfunctioning thermostat. In the event of a breakdown, the thermostat must be replaced – independently or by calling a specialist.

Flashing light when refrigerator is turned on

If the light flickers while the refrigerator is in operation or when it is turned on, it may be caused by serious damage due to uneven power supply. In other words, the lamps blink due to voltage drops in the network.

Important! If the network is stable, a flashing lamp can cause it to become unstable, causing a power surge.

If the network is unstable, the light will dim and get brighter. This is easy to see without measuring instruments.

Another reason for blinking is the simultaneous inclusion of powerful electrical appliances in the network. If a washing machine, a vacuum cleaner and a drill with a mixer are running at the same time, this can provoke blinking up to the complete shutdown of the refrigerator.

The door button and its failure is another reason to blink. Because of this, both the incandescent lamp and the LED can fail. You will need to replace the button with a working one. It is better to entrust the work to the master – he will check the electrical circuit of the refrigerator, find the cause of the failure and debug the lighting of the chamber.

Possible causes of failure: before and after a power outage

If an LED, halogen, fluorescent, or conventional bulb burned out or flickered before or after the lights went out, don’t rush to attribute the failure to a refrigerator failure. They can break for the following reasons:

  • high humidity in the chamber;
  • low temperature;
  • natural wear and tear.

If none of the above reasons is confirmed, it is worth contacting a mechanic.

How to correct the situation and fix the breakdown

If you find out why the bulb broke and decide to replace it, check if everything is in order with the lighting in the house. Proceed like this:

  • disconnect the refrigerator from the mains;
  • take food out of the chamber;
  • dismantle shelves and drawers;
  • record the ceiling cap;
  • disconnect the connectors of the wires going to the light bulb;
  • remove the protective tape;
  • purchase a similar light bulb model, install it instead of the old one;
  • before installation, check the integrity of the cartridge and the operability of the sensor;
  • fasten the protective cover in place.

Now you know everything about the reasons for the blinking light bulb in the refrigerator, and you have a guide to action if the light bulb needs to be replaced.

Important! To avoid blinking, we recommend installing a voltage stabilizer that will ensure the stability of the mains, and blinking will stop.
