We have not noticed the measured sound of technology for a long time. Manufacturers have made sure that the refrigerator runs as quietly as possible, so the appearance of extraneous sounds is confusing. If knocks or clicks are heard when turning on or stopping the refrigerator, this is alarming. Let’s figure out what to do and what to do at home.
Why does the refrigerator knock during operation
The specificity of the sounds and the time when they are heard indicate the cause of the breakdown. Pay attention when the equipment makes a knock: during operation or when it is turned off.
The first thing to do is to open the chamber door and check if the refrigerator is working, if it cools the food normally. Knocking can be heard in Indesit, Samsung, Bosch, Atlant, LG and other brands of refrigerators. It is normal for the evaporator tubes to knock against each other.
This happens when there is a temperature difference. During defrost, panels and materials may deform, bend, and make a knocking sound. In some models, during the operation of the thermostat, extraneous sounds are also heard. But in this case, you should have heard them from the first day of installation of the equipment.
The reason for the knock could be a foreign object that fell behind the bars of the rear wall. If you often put foreign objects on top of the refrigerator, something may have fallen and got stuck behind the grill.
Causes of loud knocking in the refrigerator
If you have not previously noticed extraneous sounds during the operation of the equipment, you need to sound the alarm. Perhaps these are the first signs of a breakdown.
Pay attention to the signs of a malfunction:
- When you turn on and off the refrigerator with electromechanical control, a knock, crackle is heard. As we wrote above, the reason may be in the thermistor, which is responsible for controlling the temperature in the chamber. He could knock before, but if the compressor does not start, the sound is heard clearly. It is necessary to diagnose, and if necessary, replace the thermostat.
- In addition to knocking, have you noticed that the refrigerator does not work well? Perhaps the lights in the compartment are turned off or there is no frost in the freezer. Symptoms indicate a problem with the motor-compressor. As soon as the motor starts, the start relay immediately turns it off. At the same time, a click is heard. The damage is serious, so it is better to call the master for repair.
- A reverse breakdown could occur – the start-up relay does not work. Compressor tries to start but nothing comes out. Knocks and clicks are heard. When you open the refrigerator door, you notice that there is no light in the compartment. You need to install a new relay, since it cannot be repaired.
- Motor mount problems. When the compressor is in operation, it vibrates. With loose and loose fasteners, the device may come into contact with the refrigerator body. As a result, a characteristic knock appears.
All malfunctions require immediate repair and intervention of the master.
What else to check:
- If there is an extraneous sound, check if the shelves and partitions are located correctly in the chamber.
- Are jars, pans or other utensils in contact with each other, which could cause knocking during operation.
- Is the refrigerator worth it? When installing, a slight deviation back is allowed. If the equipment is not positioned correctly, you need to adjust the legs.
How to prevent breakage
To avoid problems with refrigeration equipment, the occurrence of noise and knocks, follow the operating rules.
- Do not overload the chamber shelves with products.
- Do not clutter the top of the refrigerator with foreign objects.
- Do not keep the door open for a long time. If you have a drip defrost system, make sure that the refrigerator defrosts on time.
