Why does silver turn black? Video
Silver has been a metal that has been loved by both men and women for centuries as a material used to make jewelry. Nevertheless, silver tends to blacken, which some beliefs and superstitions associate with a reaction to a person’s health condition.
Blackening of silver and human health
Although not officially proven, people most often associate the fact of blackening of silver with body problems. Allegedly, some undiagnosed diseases that a person wearing silver does not yet feel makes their crosses or rings blacken.
In this regard, some owners of silver jewelry immediately begin to sound the alarm and run to doctors for examinations. It is believed that if the jewelry worn on the fingers or wrists darkens, the problem lies in the joints or blood flow, and if the color of the silver chain around the neck changes, then the person has problems with the heart or blood vessels.
There is also an opinion that a change in the color of the metal (both darkening and lightening) can be caused by improper functioning of the liver or kidneys, in which these organs more actively release nitrogen, which affects the color of silver.
Blackening of silver is also associated with severe stress, emotional distress or stress. Thus, a constantly nervous person who owns silver jewelry may one day discover a change in the color of the metal.
Nevertheless, official medicine does not confirm the connection between the blackening of silver and the state of health, therefore this fact is another of the category of superstitions.
The second, in the opinion of rational and non-superstitious people, is an even less plausible version – the connection between the blackening of silver worn on the body with a slander or damage sent to their owner.
The inner blackness that has come to a person results in a change in the color of the metal, which, due to its cleansing properties, warns the owner of an ailment sent by magicians or simply an “eye-witted” person
Some people inclined to believe in prejudice, after blackening their silver, go to witches to remove the slander and corruption shown in silver. Nevertheless, the fact of the existence of dark matters and their similar influences on humans has even less evidence, and is not recognized by official medicine at all.
Other causes of darkening of silver
Doctors and scientists put forward a more prosaic hypothesis about the reason for the darkening of jewelry made of this metal.
It can be just increased sweating in extreme heat or during physical exertion.
Sweat secreted from human glands reacts with silver, affecting its color.
Chemists also associate the darkening of silver with its reaction to exposure to compounds that are invisible and not felt by humans, as well as with the interaction of the metal with drugs secreted through the pores of the skin. In this case, silver darkens by reacting with sulfur.
