Why do you constantly want to drink a lot of water?

It’s normal for a person to feel thirsty after grueling exercise or prolonged exposure to the sun. But if you constantly want to drink water, you should think about your health. Consider what leads to this state.

Why do you constantly want to drink water?

Thirst is often a sign of dehydration. This symptom appears after diarrhea, bleeding, overheating in the sun or physical exertion. But a constant urge to drink water can indicate serious health problems, namely:

  1. Diabetes. In addition to thirst, there is frequent urination, dry mouth, loss or sudden weight gain.

  2. Hyperparathyroidism, or excess hormones produced by the parathyroid glands. Along with thirst, symptoms such as tooth loss, fragility of bones, muscle weakness and fatigue appear.

  3. Kidney disease. Pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis and polycystic disease are accompanied by a constant desire to drink water, even if the amount of urine decreases and edema appears.

  4. Diseases of the liver. Thirst is accompanied by pain in the right hypochondrium, nausea and yellowing of the skin.

Constantly want to drink water with diabetes mellitus

If these symptoms appear, consult a specialist. In case of diabetes mellitus and a malfunction of the thyroid gland, the help of an endocrinologist is needed, kidney disease is diagnosed by a nephrologist, and in case of liver disease, a therapist will help.

With a brain injury, the help of a neurologist is needed. The patient drinks up to 5 liters per day, and the urge to urinate is reduced.

Why do you want to drink a lot of water if there are no health problems?

Sometimes the thirst torments you for no specific reason. Then you should reconsider your diet and lifestyle.

If you quench your thirst with soda, sugary drinks and beer, then you will want to drink even more. Cool green tea with lemon will do.

The following foods make you want to drink plenty of water:

  • smoked meats and spicy foods;
  • fatty and salty dishes;
  • canned foods.

Eat more vegetables and fruits on hot days.

The desire to drink is caused by some medications: expectorants, diuretics and antihistamines, as well as antibiotics.

An immense urge to drink water appears after stress. It is enough to drink a sedative and the thirst will disappear.

Pregnancy also causes a woman to be constantly thirsty.

If you experience unreasonable thirst, when the daily dose of water you drink is more than 5 liters, go to the hospital. The causes can be serious, from hormonal disorders to brain diseases.
