Why do we write messages even while driving?

The ability to be connected all the time leads to the fact that we send phone messages in the most inappropriate places for this: in the shower, church, at funerals, and even while driving. Do we really think this is normal?

This is especially true of young people. Psychologists say that it is students who cannot resist writing messages, wherever they are, because they cannot imagine themselves without communication. But do they understand that this is wrong? “We’ve looked at writing messages in inappropriate places and situations before, but now we decided to find out if people understand that they are doing the wrong thing,” says study author Marissa Harrison, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg (USA). .

The study involved 152 students who answered 70 questions of the questionnaire. Young people reported that they actively use instant messengers: a little more than 34% of respondents send and receive at least a hundred messages a day. Scientists have suggested that they do not consider their behavior normal, but simply cannot resist the temptation to immediately find out the news and instantly respond. This temptation is so great that they forget about what is happening around. This hypothesis was confirmed in the course of the study. The majority of those surveyed admitted that texting while in the shower is inappropriate, but more than 34% said they do it anyway. The majority admitted that using a messenger in church is unacceptable, but more than 22% do so. About 7,4% wrote (sent) messages at least once while having sex, knowing full well that this was wrong. Curiously, texting in the toilet or while eating did not evoke a strong reaction, apparently, this is becoming more acceptable and the respondents had no doubt that their actions might be wrong.

In the course of her research, Marissa Garrison made another curious suggestion: perhaps the irresistible desire to respond to a message has evolutionary roots. The sound or light signals that the phone uses to notify you of new arrivals can be reminiscent of the sound of an approaching danger, which makes us (like our ancestors) quit our current activities and find out what is happening.
