3 reasons…”, “5 ways…”, “10 facts…” – such headlines are very common. The popularity of list articles is puzzling. It would seem that it is more pleasant to read a coherent text. However, psychologist Maria Konnikova convinces us of the opposite*:
1. The list tells in advance how much information we will receive. If we know from the very beginning how many items are on the list, it is easier for us to decide whether it is worth reading.
2. The list gives us information in an ordered way. It is easier for our brain to analyze it.
3. A list is more attractive to the eye than solid text. Lists are usually the first thing that catches our eye.
4. Lists help us understand the world. Writer Umberto Eco once remarked: “Culture wants to understand infinity and create order. Lists, catalogs and collections in museums, encyclopedias and dictionaries are our way of embracing the immensity.”**
