Why do some mosquitoes bite, while others do not?

We figure out how to protect ourselves from these annoying insects.

The established warm weather practically throughout Russia can be spoiled by the eternal companions of summer and evening walks – mosquitoes. To a greater extent, those who live near green areas and water bodies suffer from them. City dwellers get it too. Bloodsuckers live in basements and entrances of apartment buildings – where there are dark places with high humidity.

There are several facts, knowing that you can avoid the attack of mosquitoes even without protective sprays and aerosols.

The Moscow plastic surgeon Zurab Meladze under the nickname @ dr.meladze at TikTok decided to figure out why some people are bitten, while others do not. In his account, he gives advice on medical topics. The doctor’s video tells about who the insects are more favorable to, whose evening will be spoiled by their increased attention.

According to him, mosquitoes are guided by smell, namely they like carbon dioxide. Anyone who exhales more of it will be immediately noticed by a mosquito. In second place in the top mosquito addictions is the smell of lactic acid. It stands out among those who are actively involved in sports, often consume dairy products, drink beer, kvass and wine.

Equality has come, therefore athletes and lovers of drinking for mosquitoes in the same “weight” category – at risk.

Insects are also attracted to the smell of sweat, and they also like to bite those who have recently eaten bananas. To summarize, those who are not so active in sports, do not drink alcohol, and are not a big fan of bananas have the chances to return home in the evening with a minimum number of mosquito bites.

In the comments to the video, subscribers did not come to a consensus. Some of them criticized this theory, citing examples when mosquitoes are not so picky, and some, on the contrary, found truthful information in the words of Dr. Meladze.

There is another theory that explains why mosquitoes are especially fond of certain types of people.

According to TV channel “Science”, the taste preferences of these insects are not at all a myth. One of the versions explaining the addiction of vampires is the theory of blood groups. The first group is considered the most delicious by bloodsuckers, the third is in second place, but the second is not to the taste of mosquitoes. More often, insects bite children and pregnant women, because they exhale more carbon dioxide. Another risk factor is the abundance of bacteria on the body (as evidenced by the smell of ammonia and sweat), as well as alcohol intoxication, experts of the TV channel confirm Meladze’s words.
