Newborns are the whole world. Did you know that babies are born without knee caps, but with a mustache? Sometimes it even seems that babies are creatures from another planet. Therefore, many parents immediately panic if they notice strange behavior in their child. For example, a child sometimes sleeps with his eyes slightly open. It looks really creepy and can really scare you. Wday.ru asked a specialist whether it is worth worrying if the child is asleep and does not close his eyes.

As explained neurologist Evgeniya Rudina, during sleep, a person goes into a physiological state of rest, in which the work of consciousness partially or completely stops. The dream itself consists of a rapid and deep phase. It is in the deep phase that all muscles rest, breathing becomes calm and even. During REM sleep, the brain is still tense, muscles can twitch, and breathing is kept as in wakefulness.

“During REM sleep, the brain does not shut down completely, but continues to see pictures. Therefore, the child may not close his eyelids. This is normal especially for newborns and can last up to two years. To stop it, you need to establish a daily routine and sleep pattern. Make sure that the child is not overly overexcited during the day. If he began to lead himself too actively, then switch his attention to something calm. For example, take a quiet hour, read a fairy tale or carry away with a toy, ”the doctor advises.

But if by the age of three the baby continues to sleep with his eyes open, then this gradually develops into an ophthalmic disease, which is called lagophthalm. It can occur due to a genetic predisposition, impaired transmission of a nerve impulse and severe overexcitation (hyperactivity, psychological trauma).

“Then you need to show it to an ophthalmologist. The doctor should check the fundus for organic lesions. Then you need to visit a neurologist or neuropsychiatrist to make sure that the baby has no violations in this regard, ”says Evgenia Rudina.
