Why do cartoon characters wear the same clothes

It turned out that the artists really do a meager wardrobe for them, focusing on outfits that clearly reflect the essence of the character and his occupation. This creates a strong and reliable association in our minds. By the way, this technique was also used by the legendary man Steve Jobs, who did not cheat on jeans, a black turtleneck and sneakers of certain brands all his life.

“Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers”

The main characters of this animated epic are four rodents and a brave fly, who are always ready to help. The main characters are the chipmunks Chip and Dale. In this cartoon, they migrated from short films about the dog Pluto and Donald Duck. There the kids still have neither voice nor clothes. After humanizing the characters, the animators came up with images for them. Chip’s appearance was modeled after Indiana Jones, who wore a wide-brimmed hat and a short leather jacket. Dale’s Hawaiian shirt refers to the image of the private detective Magnum from the 1980 series of the same name.

The costume was also designed for Gadget, an inventor mouse who is a colleague and friend of the heroes. She wears a work-like overalls and special glasses. All of this speaks to her passion for technology. Rocky, the eldest of the team, has in his arsenal a characteristic flight helmet, as he is a pilot, and a raincoat jacket that he wears over a turtleneck – a thing that sends him to an older age category. All costumes are designed to show the characteristics of the character of the character and his role in the common cause.

Throughout the series, the characters remain faithful to their wardrobe, except for those episodes where their dressing is justified by a twist of the storyline. For example, if Chip and Dale need to reincarnate as ladies to solve the case, they wear dresses and wigs. Gadget cheats on her overalls, getting into a country with a different climate. Thus, the fashionable addictions of the characters are transformed not by their own will and mood, but only for the good of the common cause.

The main character of the cartoon is a duck named Quack Finger, which is often called by the nickname Black Cloak. He lives in the fictional city of Saint-Canar and protects its inhabitants from the forces of evil. The latter are diverse – the witch and the beloved of the hero Morgan Maccabr, the villains Megovolt, Antiplash, etc. The daughter of Gusen and fellow pilot Zigzak McCruck helps Black Cloak to fight all these villains.

The Black Cloak uniform is a double-breasted jacket, a hat and, of course, a cloak. At the same time, the cloak is not black at all. It is made in a lilac shade with a pink lining. This is understandable. Black is gloomy for children, and shades of purple can easily replace it without losing its mystery. The superhero’s adopted daughter is dressed like a typical teenager, wearing a printed T-shirt and sneakers. In terms of colors, her image echoes her father’s, except that a little more girlish pink was added to it. Zigzak McKreak received from the artists a pilot’s uniform with all the characteristic attributes – a flight helmet, a bomber jacket and a scarf, which usually flutters romantically when the hero controls the plane.

In the process of fighting the forces of evil, the heroes find themselves in various troubles. Where can we go without them! At the same time, pilot Zigzak McKryak remains absolutely loyal to his wardrobes. Behind it, you cannot notice the fashionable variety. Probably because he is still not the hero of the first plan. The Black Cloak cannot change his uniform due to duty. However, sometimes it transforms slightly. For example, when, according to the plot, the hero must change into a musketeer. His main image is simply stylized by the animators with the help of details – a feather appears in the hat, and the costume, while remaining in the same range, slightly changes the cut.

The series became a sequel to the full-length “Aladdin” and aired from 1994 to 1995. All the heroes have migrated from full-length to the serial story. Aladdin, Jasmine, Jean and, of course, the evil sorcerer Jafar. All of them have not changed from a visual point of view. Aladdin is wearing the same trousers and a vest over a naked body, Jasmine is wearing a blue suit from a cropped top and a trousers. All this is stylized as oriental clothes.

Jasmine uses the standard blue suit quite often. Let’s just say, often enough for it to become her trademark. Sometimes a girl allows herself to change clothes. In some episodes, she can be seen in the clothes of a poor girl when she wants to get lost in the crowd, and sometimes the princess dresses in chic outfits. The latter happens “on occasion”, when it is necessary to emphasize the royal status of the character.

Aladdin does not change his clothes too often. Like his beloved, he has a formal suit in his wardrobe. Its artists have designed for a hero for a special occasion. In the cartoon routine, Aladdin does not change his vest and pants with a patch on the knee. Thus, it can be traced that the creators of the series observe a reasonable balance in the dressing of the characters. They do not deprive the viewer of the opportunity to see their favorite characters in a new visual image. But at the same time, they do not overdo it so that the main image still prevails.

In the center of the plot is the very rich drake Scrooge McDuck, whose image, as everyone, of course, knows, is copied from Dickens’s Uncle Scrooge. Our hero reminds him of his habits, as he is a terrible curmudgeon. His image also refers us to Victorian England. The animators presented this character with clothes resembling a frock coat and a top hat typical for a gentleman. On Scrooge’s feet are something vaguely reminiscent of boots.

Scrooge’s great-nephews, who came under his care after their uncle Donald Duck went to serve in the Navy, also received clearly rendered images from the artists. Billy wears red clothes, Willie wears blue, and Dilly wears green. The female characters – the boys’ nanny Mrs. Kluvdia and her granddaughter Ponochka – prefer pink and purple. From the point of view of color stereotypes that exist in our society, this decision is understandable. Pink is the color of a young woman, lilac is his shade, typical for a more serious age category.

Throughout the series, the heroes are mainly engaged in saving Scrooge’s untold wealth from villainous encroachments. In this difficult matter, they have to be in various alterations. However, they are in no hurry to change their usual images, even when the situation calls for it. In the event that the dressing up takes place, the characters still have something that sends us back to the main image. For example, when Scrooge changes into Scottish clothes, boots still remain on his paws. The ponochka, as part of a journey that requires wearing a typical local headdress, still puts on its pink bow over it.

Baloo the bear, his young friend Keith and the head of their airline, Rebecca, are humanized bears whose adventures revolve around business. Baloo is a pilot. It looks like it. He is wearing a military-style cap and jacket. His friend little Keith is dressed as a young tomboy. The main attribute of his appearance is a baseball cap. Rebecca wears pants and a jacket. She has a 1940s knot on her head. Although there is no direct reference to the time of the action in the cartoon, there is occasional talk of a “big war”.

Two of the main characters do not change their wardrobe preferences at all – Keith Vetrogon and Bylu himself. And this despite the fact that they move quite a lot and leave the borders of their country, being in places with different climatic conditions. Even in the snow, Baloo walks in his short-sleeved shirt.

Rebecca is still a “woman”, so the animators allow variety into her wardrobe, but they do it very rarely. In one of the series, she can be seen in a dress that also resembles models from the late 1940s – early 1950s of the XNUMXth century.
