Why can death be fatal after COVID-19 vaccination?
Start COVID-19 vaccine Frequently asked questions Where can I get vaccinated? Check if you can get vaccinated

How do vaccinated people get the coronavirus? Why do covid deaths occur after vaccination? Will the vaccine protect us from the Brazilian mutation? What effect do coronavirus mutations have on vaccination? These questions are answered by Dr. Tomasz Dzieścitkowski, a virologist from the Medical University of Warsaw.

  1. Vaccination against COVID-19 is ongoing. Preparations of the companies Pfizer / BioNTech, Mederna and AstraZeneca are used in Poland
  2. The effectiveness of these vaccines varies, but as Dr. Tomasz Dzieiątkowski explains, although they do not always prevent infection, they can radically alleviate the symptoms of COVID-19
  3. However, the media reported deaths among vaccinated people
  4. It is not known what was the immune status of the deceased – emphasizes Dzieśctkowski, adding that there is a greater risk in seniors, because their immune system functions a little worse

Coronavirus. The vaccine does not always prevent infection, but it can reduce symptoms dramatically

Martyna Chmielewska, Medonet: The mRNA vaccines of the Pfizer and BioNTech companies and the Mederna companies achieve 95 percent efficiency. In turn, the AstraZeneka vector vaccine was 76 percent. This means vaccinated people can become infected with the coronavirus. How do vaccinated people get infected?

Dr hab. Tomasz Dzieiątkowski: Most of the published information concerns mRNA preparations. These vaccines are very effective. They actually prevent virtually everyone from getting infected if they are on a two-dose regimen. Research shows that in about 90 cases they prevent transmission of the virus. This means that even if a person who has just become infected does not pass the virus on, the virus will be inactivated very quickly. This is very good information. Most of the information on people vaccinated with mRNA preparations relates to those who became infected between the first and second doses. It will all depend on when the infection occurred. Did it happen before the first vaccination and the symptoms showed up after the vaccination? If the infection occurred before vaccination, the symptoms will generally be typical of COVID-19. There will be total roulette here. Symptoms can be very mild or more severe. If the infection came later, i.e. there is a level of vaccine response, the symptoms are usually very mild. This suggests extending the interval so that the second dose of vaccine is given at the earliest 28 days after infection and at the latest 42 days. In Poland, it is said that this can be extended to 6 months. So far, no reinfection of the reinfection with an interval of less than six months has been observed. This is not supported by any mRNA vaccine research.

There is little less information about AstraZeneca, a vector vaccine. This vaccine has different effectiveness depending on the interval period. Paradoxically, the longer the period between the first and second doses, the greater the effectiveness. On this basis, the period was extended from 6 to 10-12 weeks. In the UK, it has been found that AstraZeneca, even in a single dose, is very effective in preventing severe forms of COVID-19, and thus the need for hospitalization. The vaccine does not always prevent infection, but it can reduce symptoms dramatically. As a result, the patient does not have severe pneumonia, respiratory distress and is generally less likely to be infected with the coronavirus.

Coronavirus. Infection with COVID-19 after vaccination

Have vaccinated people recently contracted the coronavirus? If so, how old were they?

Yes, it does happen almost every week. People vaccinated with a single dose of the vaccine become infected with SARS-CoV-2. These people are of very different ages (from thirty to sixty years old).

  1. The current COVID-19 vaccine will only be effective for one year, scientists warn

According to the portal wp.pl in Germany, the coronavirus was seriously ill or even deceased seniors in care facilities who were vaccinated. Why are deaths still occurring after vaccination?

These are messages from popular media. It is difficult to comment on them unambiguously. It is difficult to say what the immune status of the deceased was. If we get vaccinated with even two doses, it does not mean that we will be XNUMX% protected. There is always a risk, especially in seniors, whose immune system functions a bit worse, that they will not develop a correct vaccine response. Therefore, they will still be susceptible to infection.

Coronavirus. Does the vaccine protect against the Brazilian variant?

Recently, it was reported in TVN24 Facts that the Brazilian mutation kills and infects Brazil on an unprecedented scale. Experts say people who have been infected with the coronavirus also suffer from the disease. Will the vaccine protect us from the Brazilian mutation? Are there any data on this?

There is very little scientific data on the Brazilian mutation. Most of the time, we have observational data. In Brazil, the death rate is indeed very high. This is due to the lack of a properly functioning healthcare system. The neutralizing antibodies produced after vaccination are much less effective against the Brazilian variant. We are talking about humoral or antibody dependent immunity. It should be remembered that in the case of viral infections, the most important thing is the cellular response. At the moment, we do not have the results of studies of people vaccinated with the vaccines who have contracted the Brazilian variant. We have to wait for them.

  1. Prof. Wysocki: Brazilian and South African variants more dangerous than the British

What effect do coronavirus mutations have on vaccination? Will the vaccine be resistant to the new mutations?

This is especially true of mRNA vaccines. It turns out that they are effective against most known mutations. Initial research on the J&J vaccine shows that it works against the South African variant. It only has one dose so there is a faster vaccination rate. Remember that the virus can only mutate in sensitive organisms.

The more vaccinated people in the region or around the world, the more difficult it will be for the virus to mutate. New variants will be more difficult to develop. If there were a variant that would be completely resistant to the current mRNA vaccine, reprogramming mRNA printers (these vaccines are produced in so-called mRNA printers) is a matter of the day. Therefore, we will have a vaccine in variant 2.0 that will already be effective against a new mutant with a different conformation of the S protein.
