Why are we so cruel to each other?

When it comes to making a caustic remark about someone else’s appearance, most of us are not shy about expressing ourselves. This short video shows us how ruthless we are when we don’t think about how our words hurt others.

In the spring, the former model, 27-year-old Em Ford (Em Ford) began to publish her photos on social networks – first without makeup, then with makeup. She received more than a hundred thousand comments and edited a 3-minute video from them. Here are some examples of comments:

No make up: “I can’t even look at her.” “What the hell is wrong with her face?” “Well, ugly.” “What a horror.” “Listen, did she ever wash her face with soap?” “I’m going to be sick”.

With makeup: “You’re so beautiful”. “Pretty!” “I love your makeup so much.” “You are perfect”. “Too much makeup, looks like photoshop.” “It’s because of such fakes that I don’t trust women.” “You’re ugly, that’s why you wear so much makeup.” “Can you imagine waking up next to her in the morning?”

About her work, Em says: “I wanted to show how unrealistic our expectations, both men and women, are about each other’s appearance. In social networks, we are used to seeing fake pictures and comparing ourselves with them, forgetting the most important thing – we are beautiful on our own. Over the past few months, I have received thousands of emails from people all over the world who, like me, have suffered years of self-doubt from acne. My answer is believe in yourself and never let anyone tell you that you are ugly – not even yourself.

Another important message of this video is that you can’t please everyone, so don’t even try. No matter how hard you try, there will always be those who do not like something in our appearance.

On the other hand, we can never see ourselves from the outside. How we sleep, curled up, and the chest rises and falls evenly, following the breath. We do not see ourselves when we read an exciting book – our eyes fly over the lines, sparkle with pleasure. We don’t see ourselves when we look at someone with love in our hearts. Not a single mirror can show us to us in moments when we feel truly ourselves – laughing at the top of our lungs with happiness or quietly smiling at something good. Then we would understand that we are beautiful.
