The announcement of a victory over the COVID-19 pandemic is premature, said the head of the WHO. Experts caution not to lift the restrictions as the Omicron Wave is not yet ending.
WHO warns against Omicron
– We advise caution as many countries have not yet passed the peak of the Omicron wave. In some of them, the number of people vaccinated with COVID-19 among the most vulnerable groups is low (…). This is not the moment when we can put up with all the limitations associated with the epidemic – warned during the press conference expert of the World Health Organization (WHO) Maria Van Kerkhove.
She added that WHO has always recommended that epidemic restrictions be both introduced and lifted gradually as the epidemic is changing rapidly.

WHO’s director of emergencies, Dr. Michael Ryan, added that each country should make decisions on restrictions based on the current epidemic situation, “without blindly following other countries”.
– For many countries it is a transitional phase, but not all countries are in the same situation. Those countries that decide to open up must also be prepared to reintroduce restrictions when necessary, Ryan said.
WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that COVID-19 deaths continue to rise in some countries. “It is premature for any country to declare a victory over a pandemic or a failure to combat it,” stressed the head of the WHO.
