European countries where the number of coronavirus infections is rising have lifted the restrictions too quickly, said Hans Kluge’s regional director for Europe of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday. The rise in infections caused by the BA.2 virus variant could bring a new wave of pandemic to the US as well.

As Kluge reported, Coronavirus infections increase again in UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Greece and Cyprus.

One of the reasons for the virus spreading faster is that the BA.2 sub-variant is more infectious than previous virus mutationsa, but the second reason is that sanitary restrictions in certain countries have been abandoned too quickly, stressed Kluge.

The Washington daily “The Hill” reports that the sub-variant BA.2 of the Omikron coronavirus variant is currently responsible in the US for nearly 35 percent all new infections and has become an increasingly common cause of infection for several weeks.

Omikron remains the dominant coronavirus variant in the US, but the new sub-variant could quickly become a major cause of contamination, writes The Hill.

Overall, the number of new infections, hospitalizations and deaths from the coronavirus in the US has fallen since January, reports the Hill.

Earlier on Tuesday, WHO epidemic expert Maria Van Kerkhove said sub-variant BA.2 carried the same risk of hospitalization as Omikron’s previous sub-variant BA.1.

The first samples containing BA.2 were tested in the Philippines last month, but it is still unclear where the sub-variant first appeared.

According to WHO, the Omikron variant is divided into three sub-variants – BA.1, BA.2 and BA.3.
