“We are starting to notice disturbing trends in some countries” warned WHO expert, epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove on September 16, referring to the development of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in the world. Worse still, there are countries where an increasing number of people aged 19-15 infected with COVID-49 end up in the hospital. He wrote about it, inter alia theguardian.com.
“Increase in hospitalizations in intensive care units”
COVID-19 is spreading at an alarming pace in parts of the Northern Hemisphere, even before the flu season has started, World Health Organization expert Maria Van Kerkhove warned in an online social media broadcast on September 15.
– We are starting to notice disturbing trends in some countries – she said, emphasizing: – We are observing an increase in the number of hospitalizations in intensive care units, especially in Spain, France, Montenegro, Ukraine and some US states. This is worrying because flu season is not yet here.

The virtual meeting was also attended by a surgeon, epidemiologist and WHO expert, Dr. Michael J. Ryan. The specialist emphasized that the pandemic-related “stabilization” is currently observed in South America, although – as he pointed out – the numbers are still high. In Africa, the situation seems fairly stable.
More and more young people infected with COVID-19 in hospitals
Epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove drew attention to another disturbing phenomenon. In several countries, there has been an increase in hospitalization of people aged 15-49 years infected with COVID-19.
Dr Mike Ryan noted that the flu season in the southern hemisphere has been relatively light, although he stressed the situation could easily worsen. “It might give some hope in the North, but there is no guarantee of it,” he said.
A WHO expert advised to vaccinate against influenza to people from groups particularly vulnerable to infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
Let us remind you that each of us is exposed to coronavirus infection, however, the elderly, people with reduced immunity, as well as those who have other comorbidities – including diabetes or diseases of the cardiovascular system. In their case, it is much easier to develop severe forms of the disease and even to die.

“The virus is still taking a heavy toll and we don’t know its full effects yet,” emphasized Mike Ryan.
